Did Mohammed Azharuddin Just Become a Telangana Cabinet Minister?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Hyderabad, Oct 31 (NationPress) Former Indian cricket captain and Congress leader Mohammed Azharuddin was sworn in as a minister in the Telangana Cabinet on Friday.
The oath of office and secrecy was administered by Governor Jishnu Dev Varma during a ceremony at Raj Bhavan.
Azharuddin pledged in the name of Allah and concluded the oath with slogans of 'Jai Telangana' and 'Jai Hind'.
Prominent attendees at the swearing-in included Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy, Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka, and other ministers, along with Speaker Gaddam Prasad Kumar and Legislative Council chairman G. Sukhender Reddy. The president of the Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC), Mahesh Kumar Goud, was also present.
Azharuddin's son, Mohammed Asaduddin, recently appointed as the general secretary of TPCC, attended as well.
In August, the State Cabinet decided to nominate Azharuddin as a Member of the Legislative Council (MLC) under the Governor's quota.
He is expected to handle the portfolio of minority welfare.
A former MP, Azharuddin currently serves as the working president of TPCC and is a member of its Political Affairs Committee.
At 62, his induction into the Cabinet comes just before the November 11 bye-election for the Jubilee Hills Assembly constituency.
The former cricketer, who previously contested unsuccessfully from his home constituency in 2023, was eager to run again. However, the Congress leadership opted for Naveen Yadav as their candidate, promising Azharuddin a Cabinet position.
With Azharuddin's swearing-in, the State Cabinet now comprises 16 members, marking him as the first Muslim minister in Revanth Reddy's Cabinet.
The ruling party has faced criticism for lacking a Muslim minister since it assumed power nearly two years ago.
Notably, all key Muslim candidates from the Congress, including Azharuddin, experienced defeats in the 2023 Assembly elections.
His appointment as a minister is perceived as a strategic move by the Congress party to connect with the Muslim community, who make up about 30% of the electorate in Jubilee Hills.
Interestingly, the BJP has urged the Election Commission to prevent the Cabinet expansion, claiming that Azharuddin's appointment is an attempt to appease a particular voter segment ahead of the bye-election, labeling it a breach of the Model Code of Conduct.
The Cabinet was originally formed on December 7, 2023, with the swearing-in of Chief Minister Revanth Reddy and 11 other ministers.
Following delays, the Cabinet was expanded on June 8 with the addition of three ministers, while three posts remained vacant.
The State Cabinet can accommodate a maximum of 18 ministers, including the Chief Minister.
Azharuddin was elected to the Lok Sabha from the Moradabad constituency in Uttar Pradesh in 2009, shortly after joining the Congress party. The Congress nominated him in 2014 from Rajasthan's Ton-Sawai Madhopur, but he lost that election.
In 2018, he was appointed as the Working President of the Telangana Congress, campaigning for the party in the 2018 Assembly elections but did not get a nomination for either the Assembly or Lok Sabha polls.
