Hyderabad, Oct 30 (NationPress) The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has formally requested the Chief Electoral Officer of Telangana to refrain from allowing the Congress government to augment the State Cabinet in light of the upcoming Jubilee Hills bye-election.
A team of leaders from the BJP's Telangana unit met with Chief Electoral Officer Sudharshan Reddy and presented a formal memorandum.
They highlighted media discussions suggesting that Congress leader and ex-Indian cricket captain Mohammed Azharuddin is poised for a role in the Telangana Cabinet.
BJP's deputy floor leader in the Telangana Assembly, Payal Shanker, remarked that such an action would constitute a significant breach of the Model Code of Conduct, accusing Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy of attempting to curry favor with a demographic of voters in the Jubilee Hills bye-election.
The BJP official asserted that Chief Minister Revanth Reddy is attempting to attract a specific voter base by offering a ministerial role to Azharuddin.
They emphasized that such declarations violate electoral conduct regulations and represent an effort to influence voter decisions, leading to a formal complaint submitted to the Election Commission.
The BJP called for the Congress government to halt these unethical practices during the election period.
"This proposal is merely aimed at wooing certain voters in the forthcoming Jubilee Hills bye-election. Although the Model Code of Conduct may not be applicable to all of Hyderabad, the alleged announcement by the Hon’ble Chief Minister could negatively impact the bye-election in the Jubilee Hills constituency," the complaint stated.
Furthermore, the BJP pointed out that Azharuddin was a candidate in the Jubilee Hills constituency during the 2023 Assembly elections.
Reports indicate that the AICC has given the green light for Azharuddin’s inclusion in the Cabinet, with the former cricketer expected to take the oath of office on October 31.
The Jubilee Hills bye-election is set for November 11, following the passing of sitting MLA Maganti Gopinath from the BRS in June.
State BJP chief N. Ramchander Rao has condemned the decision to appoint Azharuddin as a minister during the Jubilee Hills bye-election period, labeling it as a blatant violation of the Model Code of Conduct and an act of appeasement politics.
