New Delhi, May 15 (NationPress) Nottingham Forest striker Taiwo Awoniyi has emerged from an induced coma following critical surgery due to an abdominal injury he suffered during Sunday’s match against Leicester City.
The 27-year-old athlete incurred the injury after colliding with a goal post in the 2-2 draw against Leicester in the Premier League. He was transferred to the hospital on Monday after the Nottingham Forest medical team conducted further examinations.
After undergoing the initial phase of surgery on Monday, Awoniyi remained in an induced coma on Tuesday as doctors closely monitored his recovery process. He underwent the second part of the surgery, which involved closing the wound, on Wednesday, according to reports from the BBC.
On Tuesday, Nottingham Forest announced that Awoniyi is making a good recovery post-surgery.
Awoniyi had just entered the match as a substitute five minutes before he collided violently with the post while trying to secure a winning goal.
Although it was later revealed that Elanga was offside, the sideline official did not raise the flag until after Awoniyi had struck the post. Despite being in evident discomfort after receiving extensive treatment, Awoniyi attempted to continue playing.
Following the game, Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis approached the pitch to voice his concerns to Nuno Espirito Santo regarding the management of Awoniyi's injury, leading to a tense exchange between Marinakis and the manager.
Nonetheless, Nottingham Forest has labeled reports of a confrontation with head coach Nuno Espirito Santo as “fake news”.
“The reality is that there was no confrontation with Nuno or anyone else, either on the field or inside the stadium. There was merely shared frustration that the medical team should not have allowed the player to continue playing,” the statement read.
“We encourage former coaches, players, and other notable figures in the sport to refrain from hastily judging and spreading false information online, especially when they lack complete facts and context. Baseless outrage intended for personal social media engagement benefits no one—especially not the injured player. We appeal to influential voices to prioritize player welfare over commentary,” the statement concluded.
