Ayush Shetty, Asian Championships silver medallist, has been drawn against defending champion and top seed Shi Yuqi of China in the opening round of the BWF World Championships 2026, to be held at the Indira Gandhi Stadium, New Delhi, from 17 to 23 August. The draw, conducted in the National Capital on Wednesday, handed India's medal hopefuls a challenging path through the tournament as the country hosts the event for the first time in 17 years.

Key Draws for Indian Challengers

Five-time world championships medallist PV Sindhu opens her campaign against world number 141 Sophia Nobel of Ireland, a favourable first-round assignment. Sindhu, who won the Japan Open last month to arrive in strong form, has been placed in the same half as world number one An Se Young of South Korea but is expected to meet China's third seed Wang Zhi Yi in the pre-quarterfinals, with a potential last-eight clash against sixth seed Putri Wardani of Indonesia. She has managed to avoid both Young and defending champion Akane Yamaguchi of Japan before the medal rounds.

In men's singles, 2022 world championships bronze medallist Lakshya Sen opens against Collins Valentine Filimon of Austria and could face second seed Kunlavut Vitidsarn of Thailand as early as the pre-quarterfinals.

Satwik-Chirag and the Doubles Contingent

Fifth seeds Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty receive a bye in the opening round of the men's doubles and will next face the winners of the match between Alexander Dunn and Adam Pringle of Scotland and Thailand's Chaloempon Charoenkitamorn and Worrapol Thongsa-Nga. Their first significant test is expected to arrive in the form of the 12th-seeded Indonesian pair of Raymond Indra and Nikolaus Joaquin, who reached the Indonesia Open final in June 2026.

In mixed doubles, 15th seeds Dhruv Kapila and Tanisha Crasto also have a first-round bye and are projected to face sixth seeds Guo Xin Wa and Chen Fang Hui of China in the round of 16. Compatriots Rohan Kapoor and G. Ruthvika Shivani open against Canada's Jonathan Lai and Crystal Lai, with top seeds Feng Yan Zhe and Huang Dong Ping of China looming in the second round.

In women's doubles, two-time All England semi-finalists Gayatri Gopichand and Treesa Jolly begin against Paula Lopez and Lucia Rodriguez of Spain, while debutants Simran Singhi and Kavipriya Selvam face Nikol Carulla and Carmen Jimenez of Spain, with five-time European champions Gabriela Stoeva and Stefani Stoeva potentially awaiting them in round two. The second men's doubles pair of MR Arjun and Hariharan open against Ireland's Scott Guildea and Paul Reynolds.

The Ayush-Shi Clash: High Stakes from Round One

Ayush has lost to Shi Yuqi in all three of their previous meetings, though he has pushed the Chinese star close on each occasion. Chief coach Pullela Gopichand noted that Ayush's attacking style of play may actually make it preferable to face the world champion early rather than later in the draw. 'Overall it looks like a good draw from an Indian perspective. It will be a big first round clash between Shi Yuqi and Ayush Shetty, and given Ayush's attacking game it is better to play Shi first up than later in the tournament,' Gopichand said.

Gopichand also highlighted that the men's singles category is one of the most open events in the field, with multiple contenders capable of going all the way.

Host Nation Investment and Ambitions

Badminton Association of India (BAI) general secretary Sanjay Mishra said that over ₹20 crore has been spent refurbishing the Indira Gandhi Multipurpose Indoor Stadium ahead of the Championships. 'We are confident that the hosting of the event will set new standards for world badminton,' Mishra said.

Also in the women's singles draw, Scotland's reigning European Champion Kristy Gilmour faces fifth seed Han Yue of China, while former India Open winner Beiwen Zhang takes on Wang Zhi Yi in the opening round. India's Unnati Hooda opens against Thet Htar Thuzar of Myanmar and could meet 13th seed Michelle Li of Canada in the second round.

With the Championships kicking off on 17 August, all eyes will be on whether India can convert home advantage into podium finishes across multiple categories.
