New Delhi, March 19 (NationPress) Former Indian fast-bowler Lakshmipathy Balaji expressed his enthusiasm to witness the performance of the uncapped bowling pair of Anshul Kamboj and Gurjapneet Singh for the Chennai Super Kings as they face off against the Mumbai Indians in the opening match of IPL 2025.

The pace-bowling all-rounder Kamboj made his IPL debut last season with Mumbai Indians before being acquired by CSK during the mega auction. He showcased his skills by taking an impressive eight-wicket haul in the Duleep Trophy and achieving a ten-wicket haul in a Ranji Trophy innings for Haryana against Kerala in Lahli.

In contrast, left-arm pacer Gurjapneet claimed 22 wickets across 15 matches over two seasons in the Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL), maintaining an economy rate of 7.3. Although he was sidelined during the second leg of the Ranji Trophy due to injury, Gurjapneet has returned to fitness and is currently training with the CSK squad in preparation for IPL 2025.

"I am eager to see Anshul Kamboj play, as the new ball is crucial, especially on the Chepauk pitch. Recently, we have observed a significant increase in bounce. The Test match against Bangladesh demonstrated that bounce is now prevalent," Balaji stated.

"I believe Kamboj will excel, as he enjoys swinging the ball during evening matches, where his ability with the new ball will be advantageous. I also look forward to seeing Gurjapneet if he is fit. He is a promising young talent who has played for Tamil Nadu this season. While there are many names to consider, Gurjapneet is one to watch," Balaji continued, speaking as an IPL expert for JioStar during a virtual interaction ahead of the 18th edition of the tournament.

CSK also benefits from the presence of pacer Matheesha Pathirana, and Balaji, the team's former bowling coach, anticipates a solid bowling line-up alongside all-rounder Sam Curran. "Pathirana is fit this time; last year, there were fitness concerns. He is a key defensive bowler during death overs, fulfilling a role similar to what Dwayne Bravo used to play. Pathirana has proven himself as a match-winning bowler in the closing overs since joining CSK. With Sam Curran, who has prior experience with CSK, he understands the team's dynamics and offers flexibility with both bat and ball," Balaji elaborated.

Balaji also endorsed Rahul Tripathi over Deepak Hooda and Vijay Shankar for the number three batting position in CSK, a role once occupied by Ajinkya Rahane, Robin Uthappa, and Suresh Raina.

"All three have immense potential, but based on conditions, Tripathi's record at Chepauk is impressive. He has performed exceptionally well batting at three or four in those conditions. CSK has always deemed him valuable during auctions and strategy discussions. I think Tripathi should bat at number three to maintain a good strike rate. Batting in those positions often involves playing during the powerplay overs, which is crucial for establishing a strong run rate," Balaji noted.

"Deepak Hooda can also be advantageous, as he offers some off-spin overs, particularly against teams with multiple left-handers. He has delivered significant performances for LSG, particularly against CSK in the last two seasons. I will prioritize this order: first Rahul Tripathi, then Vijay Shankar, followed by Deepak Hooda," he explained.

Having been involved in the IPL since its inception in 2008, Balaji has witnessed the league's evolution. He played for CSK and Kolkata Knight Riders, winning the IPL in 2010 and 2012, respectively, and holds the distinction of being the first bowler to achieve a hat-trick in the IPL.

"These 18 years have brought extensive experiences. The IPL has elevated the game globally, with the world looking to us for talent development and economic growth, significantly enhancing the international cricket standard. We recently secured two trophies in just nine months," Balaji stated.

"Much credit goes to the IPL, its owners, and the leadership teams that have shaped its success. This tournament has significantly contributed to international cricket, establishing itself as a global brand rather than just an Indian one. The IPL has garnered worldwide attention, akin to the English Premier League or Formula 1. Competing on this stage was a dream for many young players, as earlier, we only had bilateral series and major tournaments like the World Cup to aspire to. Now, the IPL competes globally, evolving into an incredible journey I have enjoyed as both a player and a coach and commentator," Balaji concluded.
