Colombo, July 15 (NationPress) Bangladesh's chaotic 2025 season took another twist on Tuesday as assistant coach Mohammad Salahuddin confronted the mounting criticism regarding his position within the national team. The squad, already struggling with a series of disappointing performances, is currently facing turmoil both on and off the field ahead of the third T20I against Sri Lanka.
The team has encountered series losses to UAE, Pakistan, and Zimbabwe earlier this year. The ongoing tour in Sri Lanka has not provided any relief, as the visitors have lost both the Test and ODI series, and now trail in the T20I segment. Amid this grim situation, reports surfaced indicating that the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) is considering hiring a new batting coach—a position that Salahuddin has held since November 2024.
During a press conference preceding the third T20I, Salahuddin expressed his discontent regarding the speculation about his future and the narrative suggesting he holds excessive sway over team decisions.
“My role as a coach in the Bangladesh team isn't set in stone,” Salahuddin was quoted by ESPNCricinfo as saying. “I have never harbored any ego about it. If a more qualified individual steps in (as batting coach), it will be beneficial for the team. The Bangladesh team is not the legacy of my family. I will face criticism when I perform poorly, and I will receive praise when I do well. That is the reality.”
Salahuddin, known as one of Bangladesh's most accomplished domestic coaches, has established long-standing relationships with several national players. However, recent media reports have claimed he is exerting too much influence over selections and player roles.
“After 27-28 years of coaching, I am hearing that there are numerous complaints against me within the team. I would genuinely like to know these complaints. It would be best if they were submitted in writing. You need to provide concrete evidence. It will assist me in improving myself,” he stated.
“If I believe that the team requires a change for its betterment, I will most likely initiate that. Our team has been losing consistently, so how would I gain from favoritism?” he added.
This situation is merely the latest episode in a series of internal conflicts. Just last month, Najmul Hossain Shanto stepped down from his role as Test captain, citing confusion in leadership. “There are too many captains in the dressing room,” he bluntly remarked. Currently, Litton Das and Mehidy Hasan Miraz lead the T20I and ODI teams, respectively.
