Berlin, Jan 12 (NationPress) Bayern Munich transformed a closely contested match into a decisive victory, overpowering Wolfsburg with an 8-1 scoreline at the Allianz Arena, thereby reinforcing their position at the top of the Bundesliga. Bayern opened the scoring just five minutes in when Luis Diaz sent in a menacing cross that Kilian Fischer of Wolfsburg inadvertently redirected into his own goal. However, the visitors responded swiftly, equalizing in the 13th minute as Lovro Majer delivered a perfectly timed through ball to Dzenan Pejcinovic, who finished low past Manuel Neuer.

The match remained competitive until Bayern regained the lead at the 30-minute mark. Michael Olise provided a cross from the right, allowing Diaz to head in unchallenged, pushing the hosts ahead 2-1, according to reports from Xinhua.

Wolfsburg's defense crumbled after the interval. In the 50th minute, Olise cut in from the right to curl a shot into the bottom corner, and just three minutes later, Moritz Jenz deflected another Bayern cross into his own net.

Substitute Raphael Guerreiro added a fifth goal in the 68th minute, following a quickly executed free kick, before Harry Kane netted his 20th league goal of the season with a classic curler just a minute later. Olise found the net again in the 76th minute, and Leon Goretzka rounded off the scoring late in the match.

This victory in the 16th round leaves Bayern 11 points ahead of second-placed Borussia Dortmund, while Wolfsburg remains in 14th place, just three points above the relegation play-off zone. The 8-1 outcome marks the largest victory of the Bundesliga season to date.

Wolfsburg's sporting director Pirmin Schwegler expressed disappointment, stating, "Conceding six goals in the second half indicates serious issues. We allowed too many easy goals and committed numerous errors. Such defensive play is unsustainable in the Bundesliga."

Bayern's coach Vincent Kompany noted that the final score did not reflect the game's overall competitiveness. "Winning 8-1 is certainly not typical, and we shouldn't take it for granted. The first half posed challenges, and Wolfsburg proved they can capitalize on limited chances. Fatigue set in during the second half, allowing us to exploit our opportunities," he remarked.

In other Sunday matches, Borussia Monchengladbach triumphed 4-0 against Augsburg, with Haris Tabakovic netting twice. Matches between Werder Bremen and Hoffenheim, as well as St. Pauli and RB Leipzig, were postponed due to adverse winter conditions.
