Synopsis

Devajit Saikia, BCCI secretary, clarifies that no talks regarding the Asian Cricket Council events have occurred, deeming recent reports as mere speculation. As tensions with Pakistan persist, the BCCI remains focused on ongoing IPL and upcoming series against England, highlighting the significance of accurate reporting in sports.

Key Takeaways

  • No discussions regarding ACC events have occurred, according to BCCI secretary.
  • Reports suggesting India's withdrawal are speculative and imaginary.
  • The BCCI's priority is the IPL and series against England.
  • The ACC is currently led by the PCB chairman.
  • Political reactions support BCCI's stance.

New Delhi, May 19 (NationPress) BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia emphasized that no discussions regarding involvement in the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) events have occurred at any level. He noted that reports circulating on this topic are entirely speculative and imaginary.

Recently, several reports surfaced suggesting that the BCCI had informed the ACC of its intention to withdraw from the Women’s Emerging Asia Cup in Sri Lanka and the Men’s Asia Cup, scheduled for June and September respectively, citing ongoing tensions between India and Pakistan.

It is important to highlight that the ACC is presently led by Mohsin Naqvi, the chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and the Interior Minister of Pakistan.

“Since this morning, we have observed various news reports claiming BCCI's decision not to participate in the Asia Cup and Women's Emerging Teams Asia Cup, both organized by the ACC. Such reports lack any truth, as the BCCI has not yet discussed or taken any actions regarding these ACC events, nor have we communicated anything to the ACC. Currently, our main focus is the ongoing IPL and the upcoming series against England for both men and women,” stated Saikia in an official communication to IANS.

India retains the hosting rights for the Men’s Asia Cup, set for September this year in T20 format. The tournament will feature teams from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, UAE, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, Hong Kong, and Oman.

India is the reigning champion of the Men’s Asia Cup, having defeated Sri Lanka in the final of the 2023 edition held in Colombo in the 50-over format. That event was also influenced by tensions between India and Pakistan. Originally planned to be hosted entirely by Pakistan, the 2023 Men’s Asia Cup was conducted in a hybrid format after India declined to travel there, resulting in all matches being moved to Sri Lanka.

This hybrid model was similarly adopted for the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy, which was expected to take place entirely in Pakistan. However, India's insistence on a hybrid format led to all its matches being played in Dubai. While Pakistan exited in the league stage, India ultimately secured the trophy in Dubai on March 9.

Following speculation about India's withdrawal from ACC events, various political figures, including BJP’s national spokesperson Syed Shahnawaz Hussain, Leader of Opposition in the Rajasthan state Assembly Tika Ram Jully, and JD(U) leader K.C. Tyagi, expressed their support for BCCI's potential withdrawal from Asian cricket events involving Pakistan.

Point of View

It is crucial to highlight the importance of accurate information in the realm of sports. The BCCI's firm stance against speculative reports not only protects its reputation but also ensures that fans receive trustworthy updates. In a time of heightened tensions between nations, our commitment to integrity in reporting remains paramount.
