BCCI extends IPL 2027 retention deadline to Nov 17, auction on Dec 16 in Goa
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has extended the IPL 2027 player retention deadline by two days to 17 November, after the original cut-off of 15 November clashed with the fifth and final ODI between India and New Zealand at Bay Oval, Mount Maunganui. The IPL 2027 player auction remains scheduled for 16 December in Goa, as previously announced.
Why the Deadline Was Moved
The BCCI informed all ten IPL franchises of the extension through an official communication on Monday, 3 November. According to reports, the board determined that the overlap with a marquee international fixture would have disrupted the retention announcement and its media coverage, prompting the two-day shift. The move is primarily logistical — giving teams, broadcasters, and fans adequate attention on each event.
Full Auction Timeline
Player registration for the IPL 2027 auction opened on Monday and will close on 23 November, giving cricketers worldwide roughly three weeks to enter their names. The auction register will be finalised on 24 November, with franchises allowed until 27 November to request additions to the pool. Teams must submit their final player auction lists by 1 December, and the complete auction set list — including bidding order — is set to be unveiled on 3 December. That leaves franchises nearly two weeks to strategise before the hammer falls in Goa on 16 December.
Another Scheduling Clash on Auction Day
Notably, the 16 December auction itself overlaps with an international fixture: India are scheduled to host Sri Lanka in the second men's ODI at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on the same day. As of now, the BCCI has given no indication it plans to shift either the auction date or the ODI fixture.
Trades Completed, Season Dates Awaited
Two trades have already been confirmed ahead of the mini-auction. Delhi Capitals (DC) secured the return of former captain and wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant from Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), with left-arm wrist-spinner Kuldeep Yadav heading to Lucknow in exchange. DC also sent left-arm fast bowler T Natarajan to 2016 champions Sunrisers Hyderabad (SHR) in return for leg-spinner Zeeshan Ansari.
The 2027 IPL season dates are yet to be officially confirmed. When the IPL mapped out windows for three seasons in 2024, it earmarked 14 March to 30 May for the 2027 edition. In September, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia indicated the tournament could begin around the end of March. The Goa auction is the last mini-auction of the current cycle; a mega auction is due before the 2028 season, which will also coincide with a new media rights cycle. The current broadcast rights were sold in 2022 for ₹48,390.5 crore.
