Known affectionately as The Young Red Lions, the Belgian squad is eager to surpass their previous performance from two years ago. In the 2023 World Cup held in Malaysia, they fell short of advancing to the quarterfinals, ultimately concluding their campaign in ninth place.
The Young Red Lions recorded their finest achievement in this tournament back in 2016, during the Men’s Junior World Cup held in Lucknow, where they secured the silver medal after a defeat to the host nation, India, in the final.
Belgium finds itself in Pool D, competing alongside Egypt, Namibia, and Spain, with all their initial matches set to take place in Madurai. They will kick off their tournament journey against Namibia on November 28, followed by a match against Spain on the 30th, and wrapping up their group stage against Egypt on December 2.
Under the guidance of Head Coach Sean Dancer, the Young Red Lions are not only keen on improving their 2023 performance but are also setting their sights on clinching the gold medal in a country that holds fond memories for them. Notable players to keep an eye on include Hugo Labouchere (7 caps) and Lucas Balthazar (16 caps), both integral to Belgium's senior men's squad.
Upon their arrival, Coach Dancer expressed, “I have participated in numerous hockey tournaments globally, but I have never experienced a welcome quite like this at the FIH Hockey Men’s Junior World Cup Tamil Nadu 2025. It’s truly wonderful to be here in Madurai.”
Regarding the Young Red Lions’ preparations for the upcoming tournament, the Head Coach remarked, “We have been diligently preparing in Belgium, and we are quite pleased with our progress. We are eagerly anticipating the FIH Hockey Men’s Junior World Cup Tamil Nadu 2025.”
The first team to reach Madurai for the tournament was Ireland, which will take place from November 28 to December 10, featuring 24 teams from around the globe and marking the largest field ever in the Junior World Cup, hosted in Chennai and Madurai.
Ireland has been placed in Pool A, where they will compete against Canada, Germany, and South Africa. Known as The Green Machine, they will begin their tournament against Canada on November 28, face South Africa on November 29, and conclude their pool matches against Germany on December 1.
