Antwerp, June 20 (NationPress) The Indian men's hockey team’s journey in the ongoing FIH Hockey Pro League 2024-25 has not unfolded as anticipated. Their objective of finishing within the top three to secure a World Cup spot was a key focus when they departed India for the European leg.
After enduring six consecutive losses, the Indian men's team is set to face their long-standing rivals, Belgium, who enter the match following a recent 6-3 victory over Spain, despite having faced a 1-2 defeat in their prior encounter with the same team. Presently, Belgium holds the third position in the points table, trailing only behind the Netherlands and Australia.
In contrast, the Indian men's team has fallen to the eighth spot in the current standings, and with only two matches remaining, they aim to conclude their campaign with a much-needed victory.
In reflection, vice-captain Hardik Singh remarked, “The results have not aligned with our expectations, and it's not that our performance has been subpar. It’s more disheartening when you play well but fail to achieve the desired outcome. We will analyze this, but for now, our focus is on the last two matches here.”
India and Belgium share a competitive rivalry, consistently pushing each other to excel. “Our aim is to finish strong, tighten our defense, and create scoring opportunities,” he added.
Simultaneously, the women’s team is prepared to face Belgium in Antwerp, seeking to change their fortunes against the world’s No. 3 ranked team.
Addressing the upcoming match, women's team captain Salima Tete noted, “We had two closely contested matches against Australia and a penalty shootout with Argentina in our last outing. However, our 1-4 defeat to Argentina highlighted areas we need to strengthen, which we have worked on leading into our match against Belgium.
“In our last encounter with Belgium, we made them work hard for their wins. We are learning from our previous matches and are ready to give our all to secure a victory.”
The Indian men's and women's teams will face Belgium in a double-header scheduled for June 21 and 22.
