BGT 2024-25: Warner Emphasizes Collective Responsibility for Australia's Top Order

New Delhi, Dec 11 (NationPress) Former cricketer David Warner articulated that the duty of accumulating runs for Australia in the current Border Gavaskar Trophy does not rest solely on opener Usman Khawaja but rather on the entire top six, who must perform significantly to alleviate the burden on the team’s pace bowlers.
Khawaja has had a challenging beginning to the series, accumulating only 34 runs over the first two Tests. His struggle to convert starts has been part of a longer decline, with just one half-century in his last 16 innings for Australia. Nonetheless, Khawaja is not the only one facing difficulties. Steve Smith has managed a mere 19 runs in three innings, while Marnus Labuschagne secured his place with a determined 64 in Adelaide.
“I believe the pressure is on all the top order, not just Uzzie. Travis came out and counterpunched, scoring an impressive hundred, and we know he’s capable of that. However, it’s essential for everyone around him to provide support. It’s not just about one player; it’s about the top six accumulating significant runs and ensuring the fast bowlers can rest. The first Test was fast-paced, but the latest one showcased Mitchell Starc at his best as usual with the pink ball,” Warner stated to Fox Sports.
Warner also expressed his support for Nathan McSweeney, who has faced difficulties against India’s bowling lineup. Despite scoring only 39 runs in the first innings in Adelaide, Warner commended McSweeney’s temperament and technique.
“We saw glimpses the other day of the intent that you exhibit when scoring. There are many questions surrounding his selection, but the glimpses we've witnessed justify it. He's got a solid temperament; I admire how he sets up, and I believe he has a promising future ahead,” Warner remarked.
With the five-match series currently tied at 1-1, the third Test is set to take place from December 14 to 18 in Brisbane.
