New Delhi, Oct 22 (NationPress) Former Australia captain and cricket icon Allan Border shared his candid thoughts regarding Sam Konstas' batting approach. He emphasized the need for the young player to cease the flashy ramp shots and focus on refining his technique if he aims to secure a position in Test cricket.
The 20-year-old talent took the cricket fraternity by surprise last December by scoring an impressive 60 runs off 65 balls during his debut at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. However, he has faced challenges in maintaining consistent form in recent months, leading to doubts about his role in the forthcoming Ashes series.
Border remarked on SENQ Breakfast, "I've primarily witnessed Konstas attempting ramp shots. Is he capable of executing a cover drive or any other traditional strokes? It seems he's solely focused on this one type of shot. While the ramp shot can be a valuable addition to one’s repertoire, it might be wise to set it aside until he has some runs under his belt."
He continued, "It’s challenging to provide specific batting advice, but I would suggest, ‘just stop the ramp shot, give yourself a chance to settle in, and play conventionally.’ There are numerous ways to accumulate runs in Test matches. Ramping is not a necessity. From what I gather, he possesses the talent, but I have yet to see it in action."
Discussing Australia’s opening batsman situation, Border noted the lack of contenders besides Marnus Labuschagne, who, despite never having opened in Test cricket, has struggled to make an impact in recent outings.
However, Labuschagne has shown promise in List A and Sheffield Shield matches, scoring four centuries in five innings.
Border remarked, "It’s a million-dollar question regarding our opening lineup. Only Labuschagne appears to be a viable option, but he is not officially designated as an opener. If he is willing to take on that role, his technique and past performances could benefit the team, yet I sense he may be better suited for the No. 3 position."
He concluded, "We need to identify additional top-order players. Usman Khawaja is a certain starter for the initial Tests, and I would lean towards Renshaw as a potential choice. Weatherald is performing well, yet the top three positions are crucial for our success."
