Ricky Ponting: Sam Konstas Gaining Valuable Experience from His Early Test Matches

New Delhi, Jan 9 (NationPress) Renowned Australian cricketer Ricky Ponting is of the opinion that aspiring opener Sam Konstas still has a considerable journey ahead to establish himself in the Test format. He remarked that participating in two matches against India would have imparted numerous insights to Konstas. In his initial two Tests against India, Konstas scored a total of 113 runs, maintaining an average of 28.25 and captivating audiences with a striking 60 runs off 65 balls during his debut at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. Furthermore, he has been selected for Australia’s upcoming Test tour to Sri Lanka, which is set to commence later this month in Galle.
“I don't believe he can sustain a career as a Test opening batsman with that style of play consistently. He will gain a wealth of knowledge from the first few matches he has played, both as a batsman and as an international athlete. It’s a significant platform, and he truly enjoyed the experience at the MCG,” Ponting commented.
“I've observed this pattern frequently with emerging players. They arrive on the scene, somewhat intimidated by the enormity of it all, and it often takes them several games or series to truly discover their identity and what they need to succeed on the international stage,” Ponting elaborated during the ICC Review show.
Former Indian player and coach Ravi Shastri believes that Konstas’ enthusiasm to make a strong impression in the Tests contributed to his overly talkative demeanor on the field. “It was simply youthful exuberance. He was like a cat on a hot tin roof, eager to make a statement right away. There was a lot of chatter. He’s someone who can aggressively challenge the opposition,” Shastri stated.
“He was determined to back up his words with action, and he certainly did that, unnerving India during the match in Melbourne. However, my advice to him would be to prioritize scoring runs above all else. Concentrate on your strengths and play your natural game,” he suggested.
Shastri also emphasized the importance of Konstas reinforcing his defensive skills during his inaugural overseas Test series in Sri Lanka. “This tour to Sri Lanka will be beneficial in many respects. Exiting Australia, playing internationally, and learning from different conditions will contribute significantly to his growth and maturity,” he concluded.
