Lahore, Feb 10 (NationPress) South African opener Matthew Breetzke has made history by becoming the first player to score 150 runs on his ODI debut during the second match of the ongoing tri-series against New Zealand at Gaddafi Stadium on Monday.
His remarkable innings of 150 runs off 148 deliveries, featuring 11 fours and five sixes, has eclipsed the previous record held by the legendary West Indies batsman Desmond Haynes, who scored 148 on his first ODI appearance against Australia in 1978.
Prior to Breetzke's achievement, the highest score on ODI debut for South Africa was 124 runs by Colin Ingram against Zimbabwe in 2010. Breetzke's exceptional performance has now placed him at the pinnacle, reflecting his patience, aggression, and outstanding shot selection, as South Africa amassed a total of 304/6.
Having just completed a month-long campaign in the SA20 2025 season, Breetzke effortlessly adapted to the ODI format, creating a vital second-wicket partnership of 93 runs with Jason Smith (41).
He achieved his half-century in 68 balls and continued to strengthen his innings, ultimately reaching his maiden century in 128 balls, aided by six boundaries and two sixes.
With this feat, he became just the fourth South African to hit an ODI century on debut, joining the elite ranks of Ingram, current captain Temba Bavuma, and Reeza Hendricks.
After reaching his century, Breetzke unleashed a flurry of runs, hitting two boundaries and a six in a single over against O’Rourke, thereby boosting South Africa's scoring rate and building momentum for the team.
While his partnership with Smith laid a solid foundation, Breetzke also established another century stand for the fourth wicket with Wiaan Mulder (64), propelling South Africa past the 300-run milestone.
Set to join the Lucknow Super Giants in IPL 2025, Breetzke demonstrated complete control at the crease, enabling South Africa to secure a robust total and providing a strong platform for their bowlers in the defensive phase.
