Kolkata, Jan 22 (NationPress) In the inaugural match of the T20I series between India and England, the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) proudly inaugurated a spectator stand dedicated to the iconic fast-bowler Jhulan Goswami at the renowned Eden Gardens on Wednesday.
Additionally, the CAB announced that another stand at this prestigious venue has been named in honor of the courageous military war hero Col N.J. Nair, with both unveilings conducted by President Snehasish Ganguly. With this recognition, Jhulan becomes the first notable female cricketer to have a stand named after her in a stadium. She also had the honor of ringing the traditional Eden bell before the match commenced, which India ultimately won by seven wickets.
“On behalf of CAB, I am proud to unveil the Col N.J Nair and Jhulan Goswami stands. This is a momentous occasion for me as we pay tribute to the valor and accomplishments of these two legendary figures,” remarked Ganguly in a CAB statement.
Jhulan, a recipient of the Padma Shri and Arjuna Award, is widely acknowledged as one of the fastest bowlers in women's cricket history. She represented India across 12 Tests, 204 ODIs, and 68 T20Is from 2002 to 2022, amassing 355 wickets in total, the highest by any bowler in women's international cricket.
In 2007, she was honored with the ICC Women's Player of the Year Award and achieved the top position in the ICC Women's ODI bowling rankings in January 2016. Jhulan captained the Indian women's cricket team from 2008 to 2011. In ODIs, she holds the record for taking 255 wickets, the most in women's international cricket.
Jhulan participated in five Women's ODI World Cups – 2005, 2009, 2013, 2017, and 2022. She remains the all-time leading wicket-taker in Women's Cricket World Cups with 43 wickets and was named an Honorary Life Member of MCC in April this year. Currently, she acts as the mentor for the Bengal women's team in domestic cricket and serves as the bowling coach-cum-mentor for the Mumbai Indians in WPL.
