WFI President Advocates for Padma Vibhushan for KD Jadhav
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Mumbai, April 20 (NationPress) The president of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI), Sanjay Singh, has expressed his support for the posthumous award of the Padma Vibhushan to the iconic wrestler Khashaba Dadasaheb Jadhav. This endorsement follows recent proceedings in the Bombay High Court that addressed the issue.
The Kolhapur bench, led by Justices Madhav Jamdar and Pravin Patil, has instructed the Union government to render a definitive decision on this matter by May 4. This directive was issued during the hearing of a Public Interest Litigation initiated by the Kusteeveer Khashaba Jadhav Foundation, founded by Jadhav’s son, Ranjeet Jadhav.
The petition urges the Ministry of Home Affairs’ Padma Awards Cell to reconsider awarding Jadhav the Padma Vibhushan, India’s second-highest civilian honor, in acknowledgment of his significant contributions to Indian sports.
“It is imperative that wrestler KD Jadhav ji receives the Padma Vibhushan honor. He was our inaugural Olympic medalist. I am prepared to reach out to the relevant authorities advocating for his recognition,” stated WFI president Sanjay Singh in an interview with IANS.
During court proceedings, it was noted that there is unanimous agreement on Jadhav’s legacy as India’s first individual Olympic medalist. The court has set a timeline for the Centre to reach an appropriate conclusion, with May 5 marked for the next hearing. Additionally, the bench indicated that the state government should provide timely assistance for any required formalities.
Hailing from Maharashtra, Jadhav made history by securing a bronze medal at the 1952 Helsinki Olympics, paving the way for Indian wrestling on the world stage. He passed away in 1984 and was honored posthumously with the Arjuna Award in 2001.
The plea highlights that Jadhav’s family has submitted numerous requests over the years for recognition of his achievements. With no responses received, the foundation sought intervention from the High Court.
The court emphasized that the Padma Vibhushan is awarded for exceptional and distinguished service, reinforcing the renewed efforts to officially acknowledge Jadhav’s contributions to Indian sports, with the central government likely to reflect on the historical significance of his Olympic success.
