Mumbai, December 12 (NationPress) As we approach the end of 2025, India's World No. 7 chess Grandmaster Rameshbabu Praggnanandhaa reflects on a remarkable season and eagerly anticipates the highly significant event of the upcoming year – the Candidates 2026. This tournament will determine the challenger for World Champion Dommaraju Gukesh.
Last week, the global chess federation, FIDE, officially recognized Praggnanandhaa's qualification for the Candidates through the FIDE Circuit 2025. The young Grandmaster from Chennai has been declared the most accomplished male player from India this year, clinching titles at prestigious competitions including the Tata Steel Masters, Superbet Chess Classic Romania, UzChess Cup Masters, and the London Chess Classic Open.
"It has actually been a good year for me. I consistently finished in either first or second place in most tournaments, which is fantastic. I feel my game quality has improved, and that’s what matters," Praggnanandhaa shared with IANS during the Dharavi Chess Championship 2025, organized by Navbharat Mega Developers and the Adani Group at the District Sports Club.
In the upcoming year, Praggnanandhaa will participate in the Candidates 2026, marking his second appearance in this elite tournament aimed at selecting a challenger for the World Chess Championship Final. Although some chess enthusiasts argue that the World Championship cycle lacks strength due to certain players opting out or failing to qualify, Praggnanandhaa maintains that the event is inherently strong.
"The Candidates is a challenging tournament in its own right. I will strive to perform my best and see how it unfolds. Every participant in the Candidates is a formidable player. Those who have made it here have proven their worth, making it a strong tournament and part of the World Championship," stated the 20-year-old from Chennai, who holds a FIDE rating of 2761.
Meanwhile, Praggnanandhaa is preparing for the Global Chess League (GCL), starting on Saturday, where he will represent Alpine SG Pipers alongside notable players such as Fabiano Caruana, Anish Giri, former women's World Champion Hou Yifan, Nino Batsiashvili, and Leon Luke Mendonca.
