WPL 2025: Anjum Chopra backs MI as title contenders, praises scouting system
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Former India captain Anjum Chopra has tipped Mumbai Indians (MI) as serious contenders for the upcoming Women's Premier League (WPL) title, crediting their post-auction squad-building as a near-perfect blend of experience and youth. Speaking after the latest WPL auction, Chopra highlighted MI's ability to identify emerging domestic talent and provide young players with the environment needed to develop into match-winners.
MI's Auction Strategy: Filling the Power-Hitter Gap
According to Chopra, MI entered the auction with a clearly defined objective — securing an aggressive Indian batter capable of opening the innings. Their initial target was Kiran Navgire, who ultimately moved to Delhi Capitals (DC). MI pivoted quickly, signing Shweta Sehrawat without a bidding battle.
'MI entered the auction with a set plan of filling the power-hitter role, someone who can open the innings and bat in an aggressive manner. They initially tried going after Kiran Navgire, but she ended up joining DC. Then they moved to Shweta Sehrawat and got her without facing any challenges,' Chopra told JioStar.
She added that MI had also signed several other young players capable of slotting into the top of the order, naming Disha Kasat and Sanika Chalke as particularly talented options. 'The MI team management will have a good problem on their hands when they sit down to decide their opening combination,' Chopra noted.
The Scouting System That Builds Stars
Chopra reserved particular praise for MI's recruitment philosophy, describing their scouting operation as a consistent talent pipeline that spots players before the rest of the market catches on.
'MI's scouting system deserves a lot of credit. Every auction, they find players nobody else is talking about, and within a season or two, those same players become household names,' she said. 'What MI do well is that they do not just buy talent, they back it. They give these youngsters a clear role and let them grow, which is why so many of them come through their system and become superstars.'
This time, MI recruited six Indian players at the auction — a figure Chopra highlighted as evidence of both smart budgeting and a deliberate focus on domestic depth.
Experienced Core Provides the Right Learning Environment
Chopra also pointed to MI's international spine as a critical asset for the younger recruits. The squad includes Nat Sciver-Brunt, Hayley Matthews, Amelia Kerr, and captain Harmanpreet Kaur — a group that collectively brings considerable global experience across formats.
'With Nat Sciver-Brunt, Hayley Matthews, Amelia Kerr and Harmanpreet Kaur in the squad, the younger ones have the perfect environment to learn,' she stated. This combination of proven performers and emerging talent, Chopra argued, is precisely what has driven MI's sustained success in the WPL.
Wicketkeeping Competition Reflects Squad Depth
Another area Chopra flagged as a marker of MI's depth is the competition for the wicketkeeper's position. Rahila Firdous, who impressed behind the stumps last season, is in contention alongside Latika Inamdar, who has reportedly had a strong domestic campaign.
'Rahila was really good with the gloves last season, but it is too early to judge her batting, so MI will back her. Latika has had an amazing domestic season, and if Rahila doesn't do well, MI have a capable backup in her,' Chopra explained. She described this healthy internal competition as emblematic of how MI have built their success over the years.
With flexibility across departments, a deep batting bench, and a scouting model that consistently unearths talent, MI enter the new WPL season as a franchise with both the firepower and the infrastructure to challenge for the title.
