Shields will step in for Fernando Alonso and share the track with Formula 2 driver Jak Crawford as the team completes its required FP1 practice for rookie drivers.

“The Aston Martin Aramco Formula One Team has confirmed that Formula 2 competitor Cian Shields will hit the Yas Marina Circuit this week, taking the wheel of Fernando Alonso's AMR25 during the opening Free Practice session,” stated Aston Martin.

Shields, who is in his first season of F2, expressed his excitement about collaborating with Aston Martin over the race weekend.

“I’m extremely thankful for the chance to drive in FP1 with Aston Martin Aramco. I've gained invaluable experience working with the team this year, both in the simulator and during my TPC tests, and being entrusted with the AMR25 on a Grand Prix weekend is a monumental moment for me,” said Shields. “I’m eager to contribute to the team’s efforts on Friday and make the most of this experience.”

Gerry Hughes, Chief Engineer F1 Evolution at Aston Martin Aramco Formula One Team, remarked, “Cian has closely collaborated with our team throughout the year, accumulating experience in AMR TPC Formula One machinery and enhancing his familiarity with the AMR25 through a structured simulator program. His professionalism and feedback have been consistently impressive, and he has progressed with each opportunity.”

“This upcoming FP1 session is a fantastic way to conclude the year, allowing him to leverage the knowledge and experience he has amassed for the team at the season's final race,” Hughes added.
