IPL 2026: Gaikwad Reflects on CSK's Narrow Loss Against SRH
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Hyderabad, April 18 (NationPress) Captain Ruturaj Gaikwad acknowledged that the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) fell short during the middle overs with the bat, despite delivering a commendable performance with the ball, following their narrow 10-run defeat against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the 27th match of the Indian Premier League 2026 at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium on Saturday.
Reflecting on the match, Gaikwad noted that CSK managed to limit SRH's scoring after a rapid start. “Considering their power play, I anticipated a total between 220-230 runs. To rein it back to under 200 is something I would gladly accept,” he stated post-match.
SRH's innings was bolstered by half-centuries from Abhishek Sharma and Heinrich Klaasen, allowing them to set a target of 194/9. However, CSK's bowlers, spearheaded by Jamie Overton and Anshul Kamboj, executed an impressive comeback at the end of the innings.
In pursuit of 195 runs, CSK began strongly but lost crucial wickets at pivotal moments. Although the middle order made contributions, they fell behind the required run rate, finishing at 184/8, thereby losing by 10 runs. Eshan Malinga was SRH's standout performer, claiming three wickets.
Gaikwad emphasized a significant phase after the halfway mark as a turning point. “We needed around 80 runs in 10 overs. It was essential to build a few partnerships. Unfortunately, we only managed 4 runs in the next 2 overs post the 10-over mark. Chasing 12-13 runs in the final overs is always challenging,” he explained.
Despite the defeat, the CSK captain commended his bowling unit for their consistent performances. “Our bowlers have been performing exceptionally well over the last three games. I felt Abhishek played superbly during the power play. I believe everyone executed their roles effectively with the ball,” he remarked.
Gaikwad also praised Kamboj’s composure under pressure. “He is diligently working on his bowling, particularly in the death overs. It’s rare to find bowlers who exhibit such clarity and can communicate their plans to the captain,” he added.
Following this loss, CSK has dropped to seventh place on the points table with four points from six matches. Their next challenge will be against the Mumbai Indians (MI) on April 23.
