Ruturaj Gaikwad Optimistic of Major Comeback as CSK Earns Second Straight Win
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Chennai, April 15 (NationPress) Ruturaj Gaikwad shared his relief and renewed confidence as the Chennai Super Kings celebrated their second victory in a row against the Kolkata Knight Riders on Tuesday. Addressing his recent struggles with form, he expressed optimism about making a substantial comeback, stating he's looking forward to a 'big knock' while appreciating that 'other players are stepping up' in his absence.
Despite his subdued performance at the crease thus far, Gaikwad remained hopeful, affirming his ability to perform when it counts. He stated, “It’s essential to adapt to what the team needs based on the situation. Mentally, I feel great and positive; I believe a significant innings is imminent. Thankfully, my teammates are compensating for my dip in form, and I will deliver when it’s necessary,” he remarked during the post-match discussion.
Reflecting on the match outcome, the CSK captain noted that their total was commendable, especially considering the pitch conditions that changed as the game unfolded.
“Honestly, I feel great. We successfully defended a solid score. Initially, I thought we could aim for 220 or 210, but as the pitch began to turn after the first seven or eight overs, we realized anything around 190 or 180 would suffice. Our focus then shifted to executing a strong bowling power play, maintaining the run rate thereafter,” he explained.
Gaikwad acknowledged the bowling team for their effective execution of strategies, emphasizing that players are starting to embrace their specific roles.
“Things are gradually coming together. Everyone is becoming aware of their responsibilities—knowing which overs to bowl and the lengths required. They are adjusting well to our team’s needs. As I mentioned, we are progressively improving, which is encouraging,” he added.
He also discussed tactical choices, particularly the role of spinners and match-ups, which were crucial in controlling the game. “We wanted to utilize Noor if we faced difficulties in batting, but we felt confident. Akhil, who specializes in power play bowling, was pivotal. Sunil Narine opened for us, and despite the pitch gripping, we believed he could deliver solid overs,” he noted.
While pleased with the team's overall performance, Gaikwad recognized areas needing enhancement, particularly in the field due to missed opportunities.
“We dropped a few catches, managing to secure only one or two. The conditions were a bit challenging, with perspiration affecting grip. It’s no excuse, but we aim to improve. As long as we maintain energy and intent behind each ball, and exhibit the right attitude, we can afford to drop a few,” he commented on the missed catches.
The victory also brought a sense of relief to the captain, who admitted that the pressure of results had been weighing on him recently. He said, “It’s refreshing to secure a win after a stretch of challenging games. It was starting to affect my mindset while batting, but after the last match, I felt more relaxed and optimistic.”
