New Delhi, April 30 (NationPress) India cricketer Ruturaj Gaikwad’s childhood mentor, Mohan Jadhav, always believed that his student would eventually helm the Chennai Super Kings, but he was taken aback by how quickly it transpired.
Gaikwad joined the franchise in 2019 and was appointed CSK captain just before the 2024 IPL season commenced, following MS Dhoni’s resignation from the position. In Gaikwad’s inaugural season as captain, CSK barely missed the chance to qualify for the 2024 IPL Playoffs, finishing with an equal tally of seven wins and losses in their 14-match season, ultimately landing in fifth place, just behind Royal Challengers Bengaluru based on net run rate.
Jadhav expressed his elation when Gaikwad received the captaincy—an event that filled him with immense joy.
“I anticipated this moment, but not so soon, given the presence of other equally gifted players. However, once CSK made the announcement, it truly elevated my spirits. It felt like we were finally realizing our dreams,” Jadhav shared during his appearance on the 'House of Glory' podcast.
“In his final year under my coaching, I entrusted him with the captaincy for the first time. His demeanor back then was remarkably mature. Considering that, witnessing him today in the role of CSK captain doesn’t surprise me at all. He was destined for this, and I believe CSK sought someone precisely like him,” he elaborated.
Reflecting on Gaikwad's unwavering commitment and maturity towards cricket from a young age, Jadhav recounted how Gaikwad started as a fast bowler at the age of three upon joining the academy but later transitioned to a phenomenal batsman. Now, he proudly leads the five-time IPL champions, Chennai Super Kings.
Unfortunately, Gaikwad's IPL 2025 season came to an abrupt end when he sustained an injury to his right forearm while attempting to step down the pitch during CSK’s match against Rajasthan Royals on March 30.
