CSK's Opening Duo for IPL 2026: Gaikwad and Samson
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Mumbai, March 26 (NationPress) The captain of Chennai Super Kings (CSK), Ruturaj Gaikwad, has provided a significant clue regarding the team's opening partnership for the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) season, indicating that he and wicketkeeper batsman Sanju Samson will lead the innings together in IPL 2026.
Following a disappointing performance in the previous season where their top order proved to be a crucial weakness, CSK experimented with various combinations, all yielding unsatisfactory results. Although they introduced Ayush Mhatre to the opening slot, which led to some positive starts, the inclusion of Sanju Samson marks a strategic move towards an experienced duo.
During the IPL 2026 captain's conference held in Mumbai, when questioned about the opening partnership, Gaikwad confirmed his return to the top of the order, now alongside the newly acquired Samson.
Samson was acquired from Rajasthan Royals prior to the auction in a significant trade that saw CSK parting ways with Ravindra Jadeja and Sam Curran.
Last season, CSK struggled to maintain a stable opening combination, with Gaikwad frequently batting at No. 3. The team cycled through players like Rachin Ravindra, Devon Conway, and Rahul Tripathi at the top, none of which provided the desired results until young players like Mhatre and Dewald Brevis stepped in, adding much-needed aggression during the powerplay.
As a replacement player last season, Mhatre scored a total of 240 runs across seven innings, averaging 34.28 and boasting a striking rate of 188.97, highlighted by a remarkable 94 against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB). Meanwhile, Brevis contributed 225 runs in six innings at a strike rate of 180.
CSK is set to kick off their IPL 2026 journey against Rajasthan Royals at Barsapara Cricket Stadium, Guwahati, on March 30. Their inaugural home match in Chennai will take place on April 3 against Punjab Kings, followed by another home game against Delhi Capitals on April 11 at M.A. Chidambaram Stadium.
