Ashwin Predicts Sanju Samson's Future as CSK Captain
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, April 18 (NationPress) Veteran Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has expressed his belief that Sanju Samson might eventually assume the captaincy of the five-time champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the Indian Premier League (IPL). He emphasized that the wicketkeeper-batter should focus on establishing his own unique identity instead of following the paths laid by others.
Reflecting on the changes in CSK’s leadership throughout the years, Ashwin noted that the transition has already begun, highlighted by Ravindra Jadeja’s brief period as captain, which did not yield the expected results. He remarked that current captain Ruturaj Gaikwad has been effectively steering the team alongside head coach Stephen Fleming in recent tournaments.
“I believe the leadership transition is underway. When Jadeja took over a few years back, that marked the beginning of the change. Although it didn’t pan out as planned, Ruturaj has been in charge for the last 2-3 years with Fleming,” Ashwin shared with ESPNCricinfo.
The former CSK player mentioned that while he sees Samson possibly leading the side someday, he refrained from providing a specific timeline for this eventuality.
“If you ask me about the leadership transition, I’m not an astrologer, but I can envision Sanju captaining CSK at some point. I can’t say when, but I see it happening,” he stated.
However, Ashwin stressed that Samson’s leadership should not be burdened by the need to replicate the legacies of past greats, particularly that of MS Dhoni, under whom CSK has thrived.
“What I wouldn’t want for Sanju is to feel obligated to fill anyone’s shoes. He doesn’t need to carry anyone’s legacy. We shouldn’t live or play that way,” he remarked.
“He possesses a unique style, and I want to see his distinct mark on the game. The moment we start trying to follow someone else's path is where the problem starts. We should not live our lives imitating others,” he elaborated.
Meanwhile, Samson, who traded to CSK before the IPL 2026 Auction, has bounced back strongly after a slow start to the season, scoring a century against the Delhi Capitals in the fourth match. He maintained this momentum with a solid performance, amassing 48 runs off just 32 balls in the subsequent game.
Samson will be under the spotlight again when CSK faces the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) at the Rajiv Gandhi Stadium in Hyderabad this Saturday.
