New Delhi, July 8 (NationPress) Indian allrounder Deepti Sharma has decided to withdraw from the 2025 edition of The Hundred, primarily to manage her workload ahead of a significant cricket calendar featuring a 50-over Women’s World Cup on home soil later this year.
As reported by ESPNCricinfo, Deepti, who was instrumental in London Spirit’s championship victory last season, has chosen to back out of her £36,000 contract for a brief hiatus.
This withdrawal is a significant setback for Spirit, particularly after Deepti's iconic performance at Lord’s last year, where her dramatic straight six sealed the club’s inaugural The Hundred trophy. Australian all-rounder Charli Knott will step in for her.
Additionally, Spirit will also miss Heather Knight due to injury. In her stead, Charlie Dean is expected to assume captaincy responsibilities, and Grace Harris will replace Meg Lanning. Chris Liddle has taken over as head coach, replacing Ashley Noffke.
Currently, Deepti is touring England with the Indian team after a demanding schedule encompassing both international and domestic franchise commitments. With India aiming to reach peak performance during the World Cup later this year, the 27-year-old has prioritized rest and recovery.
This decision marks the first instance of no Indian player participating in The Hundred this year. The BCCI has not issued No-Objection Certificates (NOCs) to active male cricketers for overseas leagues, while many Indian female players were either undrafted or unavailable due to similar workload concerns.
In other league updates, Trent Rockets have announced that Ash Gardner from Australia will lead the team this season. Nat Sciver-Brunt, the England star, stepped down from the captaincy to alleviate her own workload after recently assuming national team leadership.
