New Delhi, Sep 14 (NationPress) As India gears up to challenge Pakistan in one of the most eagerly awaited matches of the Asia Cup 2025, the political atmosphere is becoming increasingly charged. Numerous opposition leaders have vocally criticized the decision to proceed with the match, deeming it a disrespectful act towards the memories of the soldiers who sacrificed their lives in recent terrorist assaults.
Congress MP Balwant Baswant Wankhade voiced his strong disapproval of the match, directly associating it with national dignity.
“While I believe that sports are merely games and there is nothing inherently wrong with competing, engaging in a match with a nation that has tarnished our dignity and taken innocent lives is unacceptable. Our soldiers displayed immense bravery during that attack and subsequently in Operation Sindoor, showcasing great valor. Allowing this match undermines our soldiers' sacrifices and reveals our nation's vulnerabilities. I vehemently condemn those who sanctioned this event,” he stated.
Congress leader Udit Raj also criticized the match sharply, implying that financial motives are driving the decision.
“Looking at social media, there is widespread opposition to this from all corners, especially since it involves Amit Shah’s son Jay Shah. The government pursues its agenda, with only a couple of individuals making decisions. Moreover, the widow of Shubham, who was martyred, mentioned that 26 people lost their lives, yet we are set to play cricket with the same nation,” he said.
Adding to the discontent, Shiv Sena(UBT) spokesperson Anand Dubey remarked: “We are against the India-Pakistan match being held in Dubai. This match is unnecessary at this time. We will appeal to the Indian government to reevaluate its decision and instruct the BCCI accordingly.”
This political uproar follows the terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, earlier this year, resulting in 26 fatalities. The Indian Army countered with Operation Sindoor, neutralizing the terrorists responsible. The match's timing, occurring less than five months post-attack, raises questions regarding the propriety of any sporting relations with Pakistan.
Despite the backlash, fan enthusiasm remains at an all-time high. The match is set for 6:30 p.m. UAE time (8:00 p.m. IST) at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium.
Earlier today, special prayers were conducted in Kashi (Varanasi), where devotees held Ganga Aarti, waved the national flag, and prayed for India’s victory, underscoring the emotional weight this match carries for many Indians.
