Cuttack, Dec 8 (NationPress) As India gears up for the T20I series opener against South Africa, team captain Suryakumar Yadav emphasized the significance of participating in domestic matches. He stated that engaging in domestic cricket serves as an essential challenge for players to remain connected with the game during the absence of international fixtures.
The upcoming series against South Africa is a crucial step in India's preparation for defending their title at the 2024 T20 World Cup. Players like Suryakumar, Sanju Samson, Abhishek Sharma, and Shivam Dube arrive at this series after excelling with their state teams in the ongoing Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.
“When it comes to domestic cricket, I believe it's vital to return to one's roots. Competing in the domestic circuit during off-international periods is a significant challenge, given its competitive nature. It prepares you well, as evidenced by how Abhishek and others have performed recently,” Suryakumar noted during the pre-match press conference on Monday.
“Transitioning from domestic games to the international arena keeps players in sync with the game. It offers invaluable learning experiences and serves as the best preparation for any athlete. Many players have actively participated in domestic competitions, which is advantageous,” he added.
Furthermore, Suryakumar stated that the Indian team intends to maintain their current combinations for the series against the Proteas, highlighting their extensive preparatory work since clinching the 2024 T20 World Cup. “Our preparations for the T20 World Cup commenced after winning the 2024 T20 World Cup. It’s not feasible to start preparing just two months prior to such a significant event,” he explained.
“Preparation is akin to studying for an exam; you wouldn’t begin cramming just days before the test. Much like studying a couple of months in advance, our World Cup preparations began long ago, focusing on specific strategies,” he continued.
“Over the past five to six series, we have utilized a similar lineup. We aim to minimize changes to our combinations in the upcoming series. Our main focus is on the style of cricket we wish to implement on the field; beyond that, we have no major alterations planned. Touch wood, everything is proceeding as expected,” he concluded.
“With two months remaining until the World Cup, we are scheduled to play 10 competitive T20 matches against two formidable teams. Our priority is the upcoming game and this series, followed by five T20 matches against New Zealand. The World Cup will be discussed when the time is right. Everything is going smoothly at this point,” he added.
