Former India captain and head coach Rahul Dravid, co-owner of the Dublin Guardians in the upcoming European T20 Premier League (ETPL), has said the tournament presents a significant opportunity for local talent to emerge on the world stage, pointing to Europe's deep-rooted club cricket culture and passion for the sport. Dravid shared his views ahead of the league's inaugural edition, scheduled to begin on 26 August 2025.

Dravid on Europe's Cricket Potential

Speaking in a statement issued by the league, Dravid highlighted that Europe's existing cricketing infrastructure makes it an ideal setting for a franchise tournament. 'I think one of the things about the ETPL is that it's in a region which already has a rich tradition and history of the game. There's a really vibrant club culture here, including so many of the local population who play the sport. I think there's a tremendous passion and a love for the game in the continent,' he said.

Dravid added that the league's primary ambition goes beyond entertainment — it is about creating a credible pathway for European cricketers. 'It's a really good opportunity, I believe, to create opportunities for a lot of the talent to be able to flourish and come onto the world stage,' he noted.

Player Experience at the Centre of the Vision

The former India coach stressed that player enjoyment would be central to the league's on-field quality. 'One of the things we really want to do is ensure everyone enjoys their cricket here and has a lot of fun playing the sport, and we want to entertain the fans. We want them to have a great experience, both on and off the field. We want them to watch some great, exciting cricket, and I think if the players are enjoying themselves, if the players are happy, then we'll see that on the field,' Dravid said.

Faf du Plessis Takes Dual Role at Rotterdam Dockers

Former South Africa captain Faf du Plessis has taken on a dual role in the ETPL — as both co-owner and active player for the Rotterdam Dockers. Du Plessis explained that the prospect of playing cricket across European cities was itself a compelling draw. 'When this opportunity came around, I was like, 'It sounds great.' Why would you not want to play cricket in Europe? There are some great cities there and, for a circuit player like myself, you want to go to cool places for the game you love,' he said.

Du Plessis also elaborated on why the ownership dimension appealed to him. 'Being part of something new, something fresh, gives you a great opportunity to take all your experience from playing in leagues around the world, take all the good, and try to bring it into a new tournament,' he added. His dual involvement is seen as a model for attracting senior international players who can also contribute to the league's long-term sustainability.

What the ETPL Represents for Global Cricket

The ETPL enters a crowded global franchise calendar, yet its European setting distinguishes it from established leagues in South Asia, the Caribbean, and Australia. With prominent co-owners like Dravid and du Plessis lending credibility, the league is positioning itself as a development-focused competition that can also deliver high-quality entertainment. Notably, this is among the first major T20 franchise leagues to be anchored primarily in continental Europe, covering cities with established cricket communities.

Whether the ETPL can build lasting local fan bases and retain international stars across seasons will be the defining test of its ambition.
