SA20 Season 5 auction: Duminy flags leadership, all-rounders as decisive
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Former South Africa all-rounder JP Duminy believes the SA20 Season 5 auction, scheduled for 7 October, will be a targeted exercise in squad-building rather than wholesale reconstruction — and that leadership quality and all-round depth will be the two factors that separate smart franchises from the rest.
A Mini-Auction With Maximum Stakes
With most SA20 rosters already well-established, the Season 5 auction is widely regarded as a smaller, gap-filling exercise. Duminy, who has navigated auctions as both a player across multiple Indian Premier League (IPL) cycles and as head coach of Paarl Royals in the inaugural SA20 season, says that context changes the nature of the bidding. 'It's about filling the gaps in terms of the roles and responsibilities, whether it's from a leadership standpoint, from a middle order, or top order,' he said in an exclusive interaction with SA20.
High Pace and Mystery Spin in Demand
On the type of players likely to attract the sharpest bidding wars, Duminy pointed to specialists who provide a clear point of difference. 'We know in the game of T20 cricket, high pace is going to be critical, and importantly, a mystery spinner. They sort of bring that X-factor, so they will look at the various components that teams need, and what are the high-value players in the auction that they will try and target,' he explained. The observation reflects a broader trend across franchise T20 leagues, where express pace and unorthodox spin have consistently commanded premium valuations.
Why Faf du Plessis Could Be the Auction's Headline Name
For Duminy, however, leadership remains the foundational variable. That makes former Joburg Super Kings captain Faf du Plessis one of the players he is most keenly watching. 'I'm always a firm believer that everything rises and falls on leadership,' Duminy said. 'You have a system where there are players from all around the world, and importantly, you've got a short space of time to get everybody on board in terms of where they're going in terms of the vision of the team, so leadership is critically important.'
Duminy added that du Plessis, at 42 years old, offers more than just captaincy credentials. 'At 42 years old, he is still leading run-scorers in tournaments around the world. So it's not just about the leadership component. He still has the X-factor in terms of performances that he puts in consistently,' he said.
All-Rounders: Mulder and Van der Dussen Among Key Targets
Duminy also expects all-rounders to command significant price premiums, naming South Africa internationals Wiaan Mulder and Rassie van der Dussen as players likely to attract strong franchise interest. 'Often in auctions, particularly in smaller auctions, you find that your all-rounders go for big money,' he noted.
On Mulder specifically, Duminy said: 'Wiaan Mulder, he fills that all-round role. Those balancing components are so critical in understanding what the skill sets are that we still need. And sometimes you can miss if you sort of go batter-heavy or bowler-heavy, and then it creates a sort of imbalance in your squad. So those players are critical.' Van der Dussen, he added, brings 'explosive power towards that top end.'
Breaking Sunrisers Eastern Cape's Dynasty
Beyond individual signings, Duminy turned his attention to the structural challenge facing every franchise: dislodging Sunrisers Eastern Cape, who have claimed the SA20 title three times. He credited coach Adi Birrell for engineering a winning formula at the Cape side, but argued that smart recruitment — tailored to home conditions — is the most plausible route to unseating them.
'Momentum creates confidence in tournaments like this, and can you find momentum at the right stages? Recruitment, for me, is probably going to be the most critical piece in the puzzle,' Duminy said. With the auction just hours away, franchises will be hoping their scouts have read the room correctly.
