Imphal, July 30 (NationPress) As the prestigious Durand Cup returned to Imphal after a two-year hiatus, enthusiastic fans from the city of Manipur flocked to witness the thrilling football action that commenced on Wednesday.
In the much-anticipated ‘Imphal Derby’, local teams Tiddim Road Athletic Union FC (TRAU FC) and North Eastern Re-Organising Cultural Association Football Club (NEROCA FC) squared off in the Group F opener of the 134th Durand Cup, marking the event’s long-awaited return to Manipur.
Football enthusiast, Sanday Wangkhemcha, expressed hopes that this tournament would provide much-needed relief to the community amid ongoing turmoil, referencing the ethnic violence that has impacted the area.
“We warmly welcome the Durand Cup, the oldest football tournament in Asia. I extend my gratitude to the Indian Army for facilitating its return and allowing the public to experience this historic event in Imphal. In these challenging times, this tournament can help uplift the spirits of our people. I wish all teams the very best. This tournament will leave a lasting impact on future generations aspiring to play football,” Wangkhemcha informed IANS.
The Governor of Manipur, Ajay Kumar Bhalla, attended the inaugural match and participated in a vibrant cultural program during the ceremony. However, some fans expressed dissatisfaction due to overcrowding in the stadium, with insufficient seating and difficulty in moving around or enjoying the match.
Despite the challenges, the community celebrated the return of such a significant tournament to Manipur, viewing it as a hopeful step towards restoring peace and normalcy in the state.
The historic rivalry between these two Manipuri football giants has delivered memorable matches over the years, with the teams collectively holding 21 major titles—10 for NEROCA and 11 for TRAU. In their encounters since 2020, NEROCA leads with 7 victories out of 11 matches, while TRAU has won 2, and 2 ended in draws. However, the unpredictability of derby matches means past records hold little weight in these crucial matchups.
Group F also includes the Indian Navy Football Team and Real Kashmir FC, creating a fiercely competitive atmosphere where every point is critical for advancing to the knockout stages. The top six group winners along with the two best second-placed teams from all groups will move on to the quarterfinals, adding pressure on both teams to achieve a favorable outcome in their opening game.
