Imphal, July 10 (NationPress) The Governor of Manipur, Ajay Kumar Bhalla, on Thursday accentuated the state's rich history as a formidable force in sports while underscoring the necessity of youth involvement in tournaments like the Durand Cup.

The Governor spoke at the trophy showcase event for the 134th Durand Cup 2025 held at the City Convention Centre in Imphal, praising the Indian Army for its unwavering commitment to fostering sports and promoting national unity.

He expressed his belief that the Durand Cup would motivate a new generation of young athletes in the area. Bhalla, who previously served as the Union Home Secretary, noted that hosting this tournament in Imphal is a clear indication of the state’s profound enthusiasm for football and the collaborative efforts of both civil and military sectors.

The Governor further stated that the Indian Army has been a steadfast supporter of sports and youth initiatives.

The vibrant participation of the Manipuri people in such events illustrates the strong mutual respect and emotional connection between the Armed Forces and society, the Governor remarked.

During the ceremony, the trophies – Durand Cup, President’s Cup, and Simla Trophy – were displayed. After touring various locations in Manipur, including Sendra, Moirang, Bishnupur, Manipur University, Kangla, and Chingmeirong War Cemetery, the trophies arrived at the City Convention Centre, where the Governor, alongside senior civil and military officials, received them.

Lieutenant General Mohit Malhotra, Chief of Staff of the Eastern Command and Chairman of the Durand Cup Organising Committee, stated, “For over 137 years, the Durand Cup has witnessed the evolution of Indian football, producing legends, uniting communities, and igniting passions across generations.”

He added that under the guidance of the Eastern Command, the Durand Cup has seen significant growth in its prestige, reach, and quality.

“Our collaborations with stakeholders nationwide have ensured that the tournament maintains its heritage while embracing modern professionalism,” he noted.

Lt. General Malhotra encouraged the people of Imphal, football fans, and the dynamic youth of Manipur to participate and witness world-class football at their doorstep.

Chief Secretary Prashant Kumar Singh, state’s Security Advisor Kuldiep Singh, Director General of Police Rajiv Singh, GOC 3-Corps, Lt Gen Abhijit S Pendharkar; GOC 57 Mtn Div, Maj Gen S S Kartikeya; and Inspector General of Assam Rifles (South), Maj Gen Ravroop Singh, also attended the trophy showcase.

The three shining trophies, including the Durand Cup, the original prize, and the rolling Shimla Trophy (introduced by Shimla residents in 1904), along with the President’s Cup, which is permanently awarded to the winners, were unveiled at this event.

The tournament is set to take place from July 23 to August 23 across five cities in India – Imphal, Shillong, Kokrajhar, Kolkata, and Jamshedpur. Six group stage matches will occur at Khuman Lampak Main Stadium, Imphal, starting from July 30 to August 12.
