Mumbai, March 10 (NationPress) Ellyse Perry, the top run-scorer in the 2025 Women’s Premier League (WPL) with 323 runs in seven innings, expressed her gratitude for being part of the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), attributing this feeling to the overwhelming support the franchise receives from its fans.
“I remember attending the first IPL match where Brendan McCullum scored approximately 150 runs for KKR. I thought it was the most astonishing thing ever. Now, standing on the same field in a packed stadium where communication is nearly impossible due to the noise—it’s simply amazing. All of us at RCB are incredibly grateful to play for this team because the support is absolutely remarkable,” Ellyse shared during the RCB Podcast - Bold and Beyond show.
Having debuted for Australia at the age of 17, Ellyse reminisced about her early international cricket experience. “It's amusing. I'm not sure how much you actually learn in the initial stages because everything feels so unfamiliar. You often see newcomers in their first year making it look effortless. That’s mainly because they carry no expectations or prior experiences. It’s a delightful time to play as you can embrace everything and enjoy the game freely.”
She also discussed the evolution of women's cricket since her debut. “When I started, few of our games were televised, maybe one or two annually, usually before men’s matches. The media coverage often perpetuated a singular narrative: ‘Do you wish to earn more?’ or ‘Do you wish for more visibility?’ It maintained the same storyline about women’s sports.”
“Fast forward 15 to 20 years, and now every match is broadcasted, we have 30,000 fans in the stadium every night, and women now have the chance to work in sports full-time, whether as players, coaches, administrators, or executives.”
Although RCB has not advanced to the WPL 2025 playoffs, Ellyse remains the franchise's standout player this season. The experienced all-rounder stated that her eagerness to learn and meet new individuals in the WPL has driven her to excel on the field.
“I believe my continuous learning has been my primary motivation. The opportunity to still play presents itself as a chance to learn something new and face challenges. Particularly in women’s cricket, it grows a little larger and better each year.
“It’s been fantastic to witness the influx of domestic talent. Interacting with numerous young players, whether at RCB or other franchises, has highlighted how significant this opportunity is for them.
“As this tournament unfolds, I see increasing chances for young girls to participate and shine, and they’re impressively skilled. It’s somewhat intimidating! Each year I return, there are fresh faces elevating the standards even higher,” she concluded.
