Birmingham, July 6 (NationPress) Following a staggering 336-run loss to India in the second Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy Test at Edgbaston, head coach Brendon McCullum acknowledged that the home team did not execute their game plan effectively and regretted a missed opportunity at the toss.
In pursuit of a record 608, Stokes & Co attempted to resist but were bowled out for 271 with well over a session remaining on day five. India's match-tying victory was significantly aided by captain Shubman Gill, who scored 269 and 161, while Akash Deep recorded a remarkable match tally of ten wickets.
“We fell short for five days. I thought India performed exceptionally well. Shubman Gill showed an elite level of play and excelled on this pitch. We didn’t manage to execute our strategy as we intended, and they thoroughly earned their victory,” McCullum stated.
“Looking back, we probably reflect on that toss and think, did we let an opportunity slip? It’s a fair assessment. We didn’t anticipate the wicket to behave as it did, which led us to some miscalculations.
“We had them at 200-5, but we failed to seize that chance. Winning the toss and opting to bowl usually gives you a fighting chance, yet we didn’t foresee the opposition scoring 580, which put us at a disadvantage,” he explained during a chat with BBC Test Match Special at the match's conclusion.
He praised Harry Brook and Jamie Smith for their impressive 303-run partnership in the first innings. “The brilliant collaboration between Jamie Smith and Harry Brook provided us with the only semblance of balance throughout the five days. We need to analyze that aspect. Our plans aren’t rigid,” he noted.
“We believed the pitch might become more favorable for batting as the match progressed, but it didn’t turn out that way. They are two very straightforward players with solid techniques who enjoy putting pressure on their opponents.”
“Staying true to your approach is crucial, especially when you're 80-5. Their mental strength was evident. Both played exceptionally, while the rest of us couldn’t make a significant impact,” he added.
When asked if England missed a chance to win due to Jasprit Bumrah's absence, McCullum replied, “Akash Deep bowled remarkably well on that surface. Having grown up on similar pitches, he hit his lengths and maximized the surface conditions.”
“He was outstanding. Bumrah is likely to return for the next match, so we must ensure we are well-prepared and ready for the upcoming challenge. It will likely be a different surface, which could be advantageous for us.
Concluding, he confirmed that Jofra Archer is fit and available for the third Test at Lord’s, commencing July 10. “He’s in shape and prepared to play, and naturally, with the other players having participated in two consecutive Tests, it’s reasonable to consider changes in the lineup, with Jofra being a key option,” he said.
