Wellington, March 22 (NationPress) After scoring a pivotal 57 runs that led South Africa to a series-tying triumph against New Zealand in the fourth T20I, wicketkeeper-batter Connor Esterhuizen explained that his strategy while at the crease was to wait for the ball and simply respond to what he faced.

In the match where the Proteas won by 19 runs, Esterhuizen celebrated his first T20I half-century, having previously scored 45, 8, and 15 in his initial three matches of the current New Zealand tour. "In the second game, I was perhaps too cautious and lacked the intent I should have had. In the last match, I might have been over-ambitious, trying to hit a shot every ball," he said.

"This time around, I focused on playing the balls presented to me, employing standard cricket shots, and waiting for the ball in my zone. That was the main distinction," Esterhuizen remarked during the post-match press briefing.

With the key players resting, Esterhuizen has seized the opportunity to represent the Proteas, expressing that the experience has been rewarding. "I’ve enjoyed every moment of my inaugural tour with the Proteas. The key takeaway for me has been how to manage pressure and scrutiny.

"While no one truly masters it, the more you encounter it, the more familiar you become. Coach Shuks (Shukri Conrad) emphasized this to us, especially to the newcomers, stressing that we would need to confront pressure and scrutiny, as everything is viewed under a microscope."

Hailing from St John’s College in Johannesburg, Esterhuizen did not participate in South Africa’s youth teams but has quickly advanced since debuting for the Lions in 2022. He has already played for South Africa A and competed in the SA20 for MI Cape Town and Pretoria Capitals.

"I’m striving to elevate my game. For many, the talent is innate, but utilizing that talent along with sound decision-making is crucial. This becomes increasingly important as you progress in your career.", he stated.

"Additionally, learning to cope with failures is vital, as this sport is fundamentally about overcoming setbacks. When success comes, it’s essential to embrace it. How you handle those failures as you advance will serve you well," he concluded.
