Miami, June 15 (NationPress) Inter Miami winger Benjamin Cremaschi praised his team's second-half effort against Al Ahly in the opening match of the FIFA Club World Cup 2025. He shared the motivational advice given by star player Lionel Messi during the break, which led to a remarkable improvement in their performance.
The match between the Egyptian team Al Ahly and Major League Soccer's Inter Miami kicked off with an intense 0-0 draw at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami on Sunday (IST).
"He advised us to maintain long possessions as the midfield was open. Messi emphasized the importance of just keeping the ball... opportunities will arise. That’s exactly what we executed to have a better second half," Cremaschi quoted FIFA.
Cremaschi is confident that his team showcased their capability to compete on the global stage, testing goalkeeper Mohamed El Shenawy after the break and holding their ground against one of Africa's most formidable clubs.
"I believe we had a solid second half. If we continue to play the way we did in that period, we could certainly be contenders in this tournament. It’s tough to make conclusions after just one game, but we’re pleased with our performance," stated Cremaschi.
The Hard Rock Stadium was filled to capacity for this marquee match. For Cremaschi, a South Florida native, the experience was particularly significant. "The atmosphere was incredible. Being from Miami, witnessing a stadium like this is truly special, and I’m extremely happy about it," he expressed.
In the first half, Inter Miami withstood numerous attacks from Al Ahly, thanks to goalkeeper Oscar Ustari, who made five crucial saves to keep the match scoreless at half-time.
Al Ahly relied on the reliable hands of goalkeeper Mohamed El Shenawy to navigate a dynamic second half. In the 51st minute, Tadeo Allende capitalized on a loose ball in the box but was denied by El Shenawy’s quick reflexes.
El Shenawy delivered key saves late in the match, including a vital stop against Fafa Picault's header in the 85th minute and another impressive save in stoppage time from a long-range effort by Lionel Messi that was destined for the top corner.
Reflecting on the match, Inter Miami head coach Javier Mascherano remarked, "We performed significantly better than them, effectively transitioned and controlled the game while having opportunities to score and secure a victory. Football can be unpredictable, and although they had some chances in the first half, we aimed to start strong with a win, and I’m pleased with the foundation we’ve built."
Both teams are set to play their next Group A matches on June 20 (IST). Inter Miami will take on FC Porto at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, while Al Ahly will face Palmeiras at MetLife Stadium near New York City.
