FIH President Tayyab Ikram Affirms HIL's Positive Impact on Global Hockey

Rourkela, Jan 1 (NationPress) Following a spectacular launch on December 28, the Hockey India League (HIL) 2024-25 has kicked off with full momentum, featuring eight men’s teams showcasing remarkable performances at the renowned Birsa Munda Hockey Stadium in Rourkela, Odisha. The President of the International Hockey Federation (FIH), Dato Tayyab Ikram, asserts that this tournament represents a significant stride for global hockey.

"The Hockey India League holds a special place in my heart. It’s a platform focused on athletes. Worldwide, we require more venues that allow athletes to shine and earn the acknowledgment they merit. The unique structure and timing of the HIL, which is organized within a window approved by the FIH, brings top athletes together to compete, transforming it into more than merely a hockey competition.

"This initiative is not only pivotal for Indian hockey, but also for the entire hockey community globally. The considerable participation of players, along with the engagement of local talent, will significantly influence the advancement and evolution of the sport," Ikram expressed during a press conference at the HIL in Rourkela.

With the men's matches taking place at one of the most prestigious hockey venues in the world, Ikram noted, "One of the finest hockey locations globally is highlighted alongside thrilling hockey action, all thanks to the league's extensive broadcasting and coverage. The enthusiasm from Rourkela is expected—they play a crucial role in recognizing and understanding the essence of what the Hockey India League truly embodies.

Reflecting on a dynamic 2024 for the global hockey organization, Ikram, who was recently re-elected as FIH President during the FIH Congress in Oman, remarked, "We commenced 2024 with the World Cup in Oman, a dream realized. It was not merely about organizing an event but also about involving emerging nations like Namibia, Kenya, Oman, and Paraguay, alongside established hockey nations such as Australia, The Netherlands, and India. It was genuinely about bridging the gap between these nations.

"In addition to the FIH Congress, we conducted two National Association Summits and engaged in processes that led to the Nations Cup 2. Our participation in the Paris Olympics was a notable highlight of 2024. We are pleased with the outcomes, marking it as one of the most successful years for global hockey," he concluded.

Discussing FIH's latest effort to enhance players' mental health through the Global Mental Health Project, Ikram emphasized their commitment to ensuring optimal health for athletes.

"This new initiative stems from my focus on athletes' welfare. The FIH is well-prepared for a mental health approach. We introduced this program during our last congress in November. We will implement it in various phases. How can we best assist athletes with their mental well-being? Until now, this topic has not received much attention.

"We are considering how to support our high-performing athletes and manage their time effectively. Every athlete's home environment and mindset differ, influencing their participation in competitions. By recognizing these factors, we aim to provide the best health support for athletes. Mental health is among the most critical aspects," stated the FIH president.
