New Delhi, Oct 13 (NationPress) The Supreme Court has mandated a CBI investigation into the tragic Karur stampede that resulted in the loss of 41 lives and left more than 100 individuals injured. In an interim ruling, a panel of Justices J.K. Maheshwari and N.V. Anjaria appointed former Supreme Court judge Justice Ajay Rastogi to oversee the CBI inquiry.

In addition to Justice Rastogi, two non-local Tamil Nadu IPS officers will be included in the supervisory committee, as directed by the apex court.

The Maheshwari-led Bench was addressing a collection of petitions that contested the Madras High Court's order for a Special Investigation Team (SIT) and called for an independent investigation.

While actor-politician Vijay’s party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), sought an inquiry led by a former Supreme Court judge, others, including BJP leader Uma Anandan, have pushed for a CBI investigation.

This devastating event is among the most significant crowd-control failures in Tamil Nadu in recent years, raising critical concerns regarding public safety during political gatherings.

Previously, the Madras High Court had formed a Special Investigation Team led by IPS officer Asra Garg to investigate the incident, while declining to move forward with a petition for a CBI probe.

In a ruling made on September 3, the Madras High Court criticized the political leaders of TVK for neglecting their followers after the incident.

“It is shocking that the event organizers, including the political leader, fled the venue, leaving their supporters behind. There was no sign of remorse, responsibility, or even regret,” remarked Justice N. Senthilkumar.

The Madras High Court strongly condemned the actions of Vijay, the event organizers, and the political party members for abandoning the scene immediately after the tragedy.

“It was essential for such a party to take immediate action to assist individuals caught in the chaotic situation resulting from the large crowd, where many children, women, and young individuals sadly lost their lives,” it emphasized.

In its special leave petition (SLP), TVK Secretary Aadhav Arjuna challenged what the party described as “unverified and biased comments” made against its leadership by the Madras High Court, asserting that TVK leaders and members had, in fact, “promptly coordinated relief and medical assistance” when reports of distress emerged.

The Madras High Court instructed the SIT to execute an impartial and timely investigation while providing ongoing updates.

Point of View

The Supreme Court's decision to initiate a CBI investigation into the Karur stampede is a crucial step towards accountability. The tragic loss of lives and the failure of crowd management at a political event underscore the pressing need for effective safety measures. As we await the outcomes of this investigation, it is imperative that all stakeholders learn from this incident to prevent future tragedies.
