New Delhi, Oct 12 (NationPress) The Supreme Court is expected to deliver its ruling on Monday regarding petitions disputing the Madras High Court's order for a Special Investigation Team (SIT) inquiry into the Karur stampede—a devastating event that resulted in the loss of 41 lives and left more than 100 injured.
According to the causelist available on the apex court's website, a bench comprising Justices J K Maheshwari and N V Anjaria will announce its decision on October 13 regarding a series of petitions calling for an independent investigation into this tragic incident.
The party of actor-politician Vijay, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), has requested an inquiry led by a former Supreme Court judge, while others, including BJP leader Uma Anandan, are advocating for a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe.
This tragedy stands out as one of the most severe crowd-control failures in Tamil Nadu in recent years, triggering widespread outrage and raising significant concerns about public safety during political gatherings.
Previously, the Madras High Court had established a Special Investigation Team (SIT) led by IPS officer Asra Garg to investigate the unfortunate incident, while turning down a plea for a CBI inquiry.
In a ruling made on September 3, the Madras High Court criticized the political leadership of TVK for neglecting their supporters following the tragic event.
“Shockingly, the programme organizers, including the party leader, fled the venue, leaving their own supporters and fans behind. There was no sign of remorse, responsibility, or even a simple expression of regret,” commented a single-judge bench of Justice N. Senthilkumar.
The Madras High Court “strongly condemned the actions of Vijay, the event organizers, and party members for abandoning the scene immediately after the incident”.
“It is essential for such a party to have taken immediate measures to assist individuals caught in the stampede, especially considering that many children, women, and young people tragically lost their lives,” it further stated.
In its special leave petition, TVK Secretary Aadhav Arjuna objected to what the party described as “unverified and biased remarks” made against its leadership by the Madras High Court, asserting that TVK leaders and supporters promptly coordinated relief and medical assistance when reports of people collapsing emerged.
The Madras High Court had instructed the SIT to conduct a fair and timely investigation, providing periodic updates.
