Bulawayo, Aug 9 (NationPress) Zakary Foulkes expressed that his ‘awesome’ record-setting Test debut for New Zealand against Zimbabwe has yet to fully register, but he was thrilled to contribute to his team's 2-0 series triumph.
On Saturday, New Zealand achieved their largest Test victory by defeating Zimbabwe by an innings and 359 runs at Queens Sports Club, securing a 2-0 series win. Foulkes emerged as the star performer on Day Three, capturing a five-wicket haul as Zimbabwe was dismissed for just 117 runs in their second innings.
Foulkes concluded the match with outstanding figures of 9-75, marking the best debut performance for a New Zealand bowler, surpassing Will O’Rourke’s previous record of 9-93 against South Africa in Hamilton back in 2024. “Honestly, it still hasn't fully sunk in. Everything transpired rather swiftly. It was fantastic to be out there with the team, and I don’t have much else to say,” he remarked.
“The entire experience of my Test debut felt a bit hurried. Having primarily played white-ball cricket, adjusting to bowling longer spells was a challenge on day two. Fortunately, we didn’t have to bowl that day, which was a relief. It was exciting to transition back to red-ball cricket,” Foulkes added.
“Tommy even brought out a drink and mentioned that I was close to breaking a record. It’s just one of those remarkable moments,” Foulkes shared in a video released by New Zealand Cricket (NZC) following the match.
He made his debut alongside fellow fast bowlers Jacob Duffy and Matthew Fisher, who also contributed significantly to the Black Caps’ success. “It was a great experience. Duffy has really taken me under his wing, which I appreciate. We've had some time playing together for the Black Caps,” he said.
“It was also inspiring to see Fisher shine after his impressive performances over the past couple of years. Seeing him bowl quickly in the nets was quite something, but it was fantastic to witness both him and Duffy excel during the game,” Foulkes mentioned.
He expressed his excitement about playing alongside Matt Henry, who took 16 wickets throughout the series, and praised the clarity and composed approach of head coach Rob Walter.
“Growing up, I always admired Matt Henry, Trent Boult, and Tim Southee. It’s incredible to share the field with him now. I’ve played a few matches with them for Canterbury and have trained together, so being part of this team is truly special,” Foulkes noted.
“Playing under Walter’s guidance has been really enjoyable. His communication is clear and concise, and his presence has made for a positive atmosphere within the group. Everyone seems to be having a great time with Rob,” he concluded.
