Bulawayo, Aug 9 (NationPress) New Zealand has achieved their greatest Test victory to date, defeating Zimbabwe by an innings and 359 runs, thereby completing a 2-0 series triumph at the Queens Sports Club on Saturday. This significant loss represents Zimbabwe’s most substantial defeat in the history of Test cricket.
After New Zealand declared their first innings at 601/3 in 130 overs at the commencement of the third day, debutant pacer Zakary Foulkes recorded an impressive five-wicket haul, setting the record for the finest figures by a New Zealand bowler on Test debut.
Experienced seamer Matt Henry, along with Jacob Duffy and Matt Fisher, contributed to bowling Zimbabwe out for 117 in their second innings. Henry capped off an impressive series with a total of 16 wickets, as he prepares to join Welsh Fire for a stint in The Hundred.
For Zimbabwe, Nick Welch was the sole player to put up a fight, scoring an unbeaten 47 after entering the crease during the first over of their second innings, as he struggled to score while witnessing wickets fall around him.
Brian Bennett was dismissed in the very first over, bowled out by Henry’s inswinger, while Brendan Taylor fell to an outswinger from the same pacer. Sean Williams was caught off Duffy, and Craig Ervine was dismissed by Fisher’s delivery.
All-rounder Sikandar Raza faced challenges with the short ball once more, resulting in a catch to gully off Foulkes. Additionally, Zimbabwe was hindered as none of the lower-order batsmen managed to reach double figures.
Though Duffy appeared to have clinched the victory early for New Zealand, a no-ball call thwarted his efforts. Nevertheless, the end came swiftly as Duffy had Tanaka Chivanga caught at gully, sealing a resounding victory for New Zealand.
This commanding result also signifies the successful conclusion of the tour for the Mitchell Santner-led Black Caps, who had previously triumphed in the T20I Tri-series, which featured South Africa as the third team.
