Kingston, July 20 (NationPress) Jake Fraser-McGurk has been named to open the batting in the first T20I against the West Indies after Matt Short was ruled out of Australia's T20 tour of the Caribbean. Australia has officially announced their starting eleven for this opening match of the five-match series, which is scheduled to take place at Sabina Park on Monday (IST).
Fraser-McGurk, who was a late addition to the Caribbean tour after being initially omitted from the 16-player squad, stepped in as a replacement for Spencer Johnson, who is sidelined due to back soreness first identified during this year’s IPL.
In addition, Mitchell Owen, celebrated for his role in helping Hobart secure their first Big Bash title last summer, is set to make his debut and will occupy a spot in the middle order.
Short experienced discomfort following training in Jamaica ahead of this series opener and has been sent back home with what has been labeled a minor side strain.
Tim David, currently recovering from a hamstring injury sustained while playing for Royal Challengers Bengaluru in this year's IPL, has also been rested for the initial match, with Cooper Connolly set to bat at number seven.
With Australia resting several senior players, including Travis Head, Alex Carey, and the pace trio of Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, and Josh Hazlewood, this series presents an opportunity to refine the squad ahead of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup next year in India and Sri Lanka.
“Our primary goal is to represent Australia and win the series,” stated Australia’s T20I captain Mitch Marsh in an interview with cricket.com.au. “We want to create an environment where players feel connected and united as a team. There are opportunities for many, especially with several key players missing for well-deserved rest.”
“We aim for flexibility and collaboration. This is a chance for those who have been on the fringes to come together and present a solid unit,” he added.
Australia’s XI for the first T20I includes: Mitch Marsh (c), Jake Fraser-McGurk, Josh Inglis (wk), Cameron Green, Glenn Maxwell, Mitchell Owen, Cooper Connolly, Ben Dwarshuis, Sean Abbott, Nathan Ellis, Adam Zampa.
