New Delhi, June 4 (NationPress) Mitch Owen has received his first call-up to the Australian cricket team, being named in the squad for the five-match T20I series against the West Indies scheduled for July. Jake Fraser-McGurk, the young opener, has been notably excluded from the T20I squad following a challenging performance period. Additionally, Marcus Stoinis and Xavier Bartlett have also been omitted for the Caribbean tour.

Returning to the T20I setup are Cameron Green and Cooper Connolly, who have recovered from injuries, with Green expected to participate as a specialist batter. Josh Hazlewood, fresh from winning the IPL 2025 title with the Royal Challengers Bengaluru, re-enters the squad along with Glenn Maxwell. In a significant move, Matthew Kuhnemann has been awarded his first call-up to the T20I team.

Notably absent from the T20I series are Pat Cummins, Travis Head, and Mitchell Starc, who will return to Australia after the Test series in the West Indies. Mitchell Marsh resumes captaincy of Australia after previously missing the T20I series against Pakistan in November 2024 due to paternity leave and preparations for Tests against India.

Owen's selection is a result of his impressive performance in the BBL season with the Hobart Hurricanes, where he scored a century in the final, contributing to the team's first championship title. Despite struggling in the SA20, PSL, and IPL, the selection committee led by George Bailey is eager to see how Owen manages the challenges of international cricket at the top of the order.

Australia has achieved victories in 12 of their last 14 T20I matches while gearing up for the upcoming ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka next year. Following the series against the West Indies, Australia will also face T20I matches against South Africa, New Zealand, and India.

“We have a packed T20 schedule ahead, starting with this Series, followed by three matches against South Africa and New Zealand, and five home matches against India as we continue to refine our squad for the World Cup in the subcontinent,” stated Bailey.

“Several players not included in this squad can still make their way into the mix for the upcoming Indian Series and during the Big Bash. The connections, role developments, and combinations are evolving positively as we prepare for the World Cup, making this an exciting time for our T20 program,” Bailey added.
