Is Gambhir Right to Tell IPL Team Owners to ‘Stay in Their Domain’?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Visakhapatnam, Dec 6 (NationPress) Following the scrutiny of Team India head coach Gautam Gambhir after a disappointing Test series against South Africa, he issued a passionate response to his critics after India secured the ODI series 2–1, culminating in a commanding nine-wicket victory over the Proteas in the final match on Saturday in Visakhapatnam.
His sharp comments appeared to target Parth Jindal, co-owner of Delhi Capitals, who had publicly suggested a divided coaching structure for Indian cricket.
In a media briefing after the series win, Gambhir pointed out that the absence of captain Shubman Gill, who was out due to a neck injury, played a significant role in India's Test series defeat. He stressed that those outside of the cricketing community should not comment on issues they are not familiar with.
He remarked: “I am astonished that no one discussed this (Gill's absence) and the focus was on the pitch and various other factors. There were individuals unrelated to cricket voicing their opinions. An IPL team owner even proposed a split coaching staff without any connection to the game. People must remain in their own fields. If I don’t meddle in others’ affairs, they have no right to interfere in mine.”
Confirming Gill's readiness for the upcoming T20Is, Gambhir stated: “Shubman is set to go—that's why he has been chosen. He is fit, eager to contribute, and improve. Moreover, we have exceptional players in this squad. As I have reiterated, they are world-class talents.”
The controversy ignited by Jindal’s social media critique of India’s Test performances included a statement: “Not even close, what a complete thrashing at home! I can’t remember seeing our Test team being so weak at home! This situation arises when red-ball specialists aren’t selected… Time for India to appoint a specialist red-ball coach for Test cricket @BCCI.”
India is now preparing for a five-match T20I series against South Africa, starting on December 9 in Cuttack, followed by matches on December 11 (New Chandigarh), December 14 (Dharamsala), December 17 (Lucknow), and December 19 (Ahmedabad).
