Sourav Ganguly joins Delhi Capitals as head coach, eyes IPL title
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Sourav Ganguly has been appointed head coach of Delhi Capitals (DC) ahead of the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) season, with the former India captain expressing strong excitement about the new challenge. Speaking in a video released on the franchise's official YouTube channel on Wednesday, 7 October 2026, Ganguly pledged to give his best to steer the side toward championship glory.
Ganguly's Long Association with Delhi Capitals
Ganguly's connection with DC spans multiple roles over nearly a decade. He first served as the franchise's mentor during the 2019 IPL season, when Delhi reached the semi-finals, before stepping away to take charge as BCCI President. He returned to the JSW-backed setup in 2024 as director of cricket, and has also been closely involved with the Women's Premier League (WPL) side. His formal coaching debut came with Pretoria Capitals in the 2025 SA20 season, giving him firsthand experience in managing a franchise dressing room.
What Clicked for Ganguly as a Coach
Ganguly acknowledged that the shift from player to coach demands a fundamentally different mindset. 'I wanted to experience the mindset of a coach because it's not the same as a player. It's a bit different. You need to understand things. You need to be relaxed. You still need to find a way to get the best out of players and work with the players because players are different,' he said.
He added that the transition requires letting go of individual instincts. 'It's not you batting or you bowling anymore. It's about somebody else batting and bowling and winning cricket matches. So it's important that you sync with them and understand what they want, how they can get better, and work with them, which is very important,' he explained.
Squad Strength and Key Addition of Rishabh Pant
Ganguly highlighted the squad's depth, centring his optimism around the high-profile return of wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant, who rejoined DC via a trade earlier this year. 'We needed a middle-order Indian batter, and Pant fits it perfectly. He was with us. He played well for us in the past. Hopefully this year, next year, when he turns up again, I think he'll use the time and space and the matches to become a better player. He enjoys batting at Feroz Shah Kotla in Delhi, and hopefully we'll see the best of Pant in the years to come for the Delhi shirt,' he said.
The coach also namechecked a formidable core: KL Rahul, Axar Patel, Mitchell Starc, Lungi Ngidi, David Miller, and Rassie van der Dussen (Stubbs). 'It's a pretty strong team, man, and I hope we play to our potential,' Ganguly noted. On tactical philosophy, he was unequivocal: 'In T20 cricket, it's only one brand. Keep hitting sixes and keep hitting fours. So that's what the brand is all about.'
The Weight of 18 Years Without a Title
Ganguly did not shy away from acknowledging the franchise's underwhelming record over nearly two decades. Beyond a 2020 final appearance and a 2019 semi-final run, DC has had little to celebrate. He called out the need for the players to repay the faith of co-owners Parth Jindal and Kiran Kumar Grandhi. 'The team deserves better performances. The owners deserve much better than what this franchise has done over the last 17, 18 years. Getting to the final in 2020 and semi-final in 2019, eight years before and four years after that, it hasn't been good,' he said candidly.
He stressed that the players owe the management a collective effort. 'I think it's time that the Delhi boys give it back to them, give them that happiness, give them that opportunity to rejoice with the squad,' he asserted. Also holding the role of President of the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB), Ganguly brings administrative heft alongside coaching ambition — a combination DC's ownership is clearly banking on as the franchise bids to end its long wait for an IPL title.
