New Delhi, Nov 3 (NationPress) Indian cricketer Shafali Verma shared her thoughts on her unexpected return to the national team and her significant contribution in securing victory in the 2025 Women’s ODI World Cup. She expressed that her last-minute opportunity to participate in this prestigious event was indeed part of God’s divine plan.
During the final match at DY Patil Stadium on Sunday, Shafali emerged as India’s top scorer, amassing 87 runs and claiming two wickets, which earned her the Player of the Match title in India’s historic 52-run triumph over South Africa. This remarkable comeback was especially notable as she was only called into the squad last week to replace the injured Pratika Rawal.
“When I received the call before the semi-final, I was genuinely shocked and incredibly thrilled. Such last-minute chances are rare. I reminded myself to keep it simple and relish the experience. Scoring runs and taking wickets in the final felt like living a dream. I firmly believe this was all part of God’s plan,” Shafali shared on JioStar.
She praised the team’s inclusive atmosphere and leadership, which helped her integrate seamlessly. “From the moment I rejoined the squad, everyone made me feel like I belonged. Head Coach Amol Muzumdar and Captain Harmanpreet Kaur encouraged me to play fearlessly, stick to my natural game, and not stress over mistakes.
“This freedom instilled a lot of confidence in me. The girls were always supportive. If someone felt down, others were there to lift them. That’s what makes this team so extraordinary,” she added.
Shafali also openly discussed the disappointment of not making the initial selection and how it motivated her to improve. “When I wasn’t selected initially, it stung. But I chose to focus on enhancing my fitness and controlling what I could. My teammates constantly assured me, ‘You’ll be back, just stay prepared.’ Their belief and my family’s support propelled me. Now, being here as a World Cup champion… it feels surreal,” she expressed.
She further commended the team’s culture of openness and respect. “I always believed I would eventually join this team. Our squad has a perfect blend of youth and experience, and the seniors ensure everyone feels valued. In team discussions, every voice matters. This kind of environment truly boosts your confidence to play freely,” she stated.
Regarding the final’s strategy, Verma emphasized the importance of remaining focused amidst the pressure. “Prior to the final, our strategy was straightforward: don’t overthink. Play to our strengths and treat it like any other match.
“Harman di (Harmanpreet Kaur), Smriti di (Smriti Mandhana), and the seniors kept the dressing room calm. Everyone supported each other, whether it was Richa Ghosh and I cheering from the sidelines or motivating the bowlers during tough phases. That belief was crucial in helping us lift the trophy,” she explained.
She regarded the epic semifinal victory over Australia as pivotal in India’s journey. “Defeating Australia in the semi-final gave us a significant confidence boost. We’ve faced losses against them previously, so that win shifted everything. It made us realize we could go all the way. Each player gave their all in the final, especially on the field. We aimed to leave everything on the pitch. That’s what made this victory so emotional and special for us all,” she noted.
Teammate Jemimah Rodrigues also praised Shafali’s influence on India’s success in the final. “Some moments feel destined, and Shafali’s last-minute inclusion before the semi-final was one of those. We genuinely couldn’t have achieved this without her.
“Beyond the performances, the camaraderie of this team was remarkable. Everyone had one another’s backs, whether facing a tough day or celebrating a significant win; the support was unwavering. Winning the World Cup is monumental, but the bond we’ve formed means even more,” she concluded.
