London, July 15 (NationPress) The captain of India, Shubman Gill, commended senior all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja and the lower order for their remarkable effort in sustaining the game, bringing the Lord's Test to a thrilling conclusion, where India narrowly missed out on a memorable victory by just 22 runs.
Starting from a challenging position of 58/4, England's pace attack was relentless, and India found themselves eight down by the time lunch came. Nevertheless, Ravindra Jadeja stood firm, scoring a resilient 61 not out from 181 deliveries, forming crucial partnerships of 30, 35, and 23 with Nitish Reddy, Jasprit Bumrah, and Mohammed Siraj, respectively, bringing India close to the target.
Despite the valiant efforts of Jadeja and the lower-order batsmen, India fell short, getting bowled out for 170 in 74.5 overs.
Gill expressed high praise for Jadeja, who achieved his fourth consecutive half-century of the series, scoring 61 runs out of the team’s total of 99 runs while facing 30 of the 55 overs during his determined innings.
"He (Jadeja) is among India's most invaluable players. The experience he brings, along with his unique skill set across bowling, batting, and fielding, is truly rare. The composure he displayed today was simply incredible to witness.
"We had discussed the necessity for our lower-order batsmen to contribute more in the previous matches. The character and bravery they exhibited were commendable.
"It felt like we were in the game until the very end, and with just a bit more from a partnership, we could have reached closer to our target. It’s a proud moment for the team," he added.
England seemed on the path to a memorable win as Stokes and Archer took three wickets, including those of Rishabh Pant and KL Rahul, in the opening hour, while Woakes dismissed Nitish Kumar Reddy right before lunch.
"We didn’t perform as well yesterday and today. In the top order, it was crucial that if we had formed one or two partnerships worth 50 runs, it would have made batting easier after 30-40 overs. Unfortunately, this was the first time we didn’t perform to our usual standards in the series, but such things happen," Gill acknowledged.
"We believed chasing 193 was feasible. We needed to play well for 20-25 overs and aim for one or two partnerships of 50 runs. The longer the match progressed, the easier it would have been for us," he concluded.
