Mumbai, Nov 18 (NationPress) Shubman Gill will join the team as they travel to Guwahati on Wednesday. A determination regarding his involvement in the upcoming second Test against South Africa, which is set to commence on Saturday, will be made accordingly.
During the second day of the initial Test at Eden Gardens in Kolkata, after delivering a sweeping shot off the South African off-spinner Simon Harmer, Gill suddenly clutched his neck in evident pain and had to retire hurt after scoring just four runs.
He was subsequently taken to the hospital for further examination, wearing a cervical collar. The BCCI confirmed prior to the third day’s play that Gill would not continue in the match, which India lost by 30 runs, placing them at 0-1 in the two-match series.
“Captain Shubman Gill sustained a neck injury on Day 2 of the Kolkata Test against South Africa and was taken to the hospital for evaluation after the day's play concluded. He has been under observation and was discharged the following day,” stated a BCCI representative.
“Shubman is showing positive responses to the treatment and will travel to Guwahati with the team on November 19, 2025. He will continue to be closely monitored by the BCCI medical staff, and a decision regarding his participation in the second Test will follow,” added BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia in an official statement.
Previously, Gill had dealt with a stiff neck leading up to India's first Test against New Zealand in Bengaluru back in October 2024, which ultimately sidelined him from that match. This same issue caused him to miss the second T20I against Sri Lanka at Pallekele International Cricket Stadium in July 2024.
Since participating in the Asia Cup in the UAE, Gill has been on an uninterrupted playing streak across formats, being one of the four Test players who flew directly to Kolkata from Australia after their T20I series concluded in a 2-1 victory.
