New Delhi, Feb 11 (NationPress) Former South African cricketer and SA20 League Commissioner Graeme Smith has praised Dinesh Karthik, labeling him a significant asset to the league following the veteran Indian wicketkeeper-batter’s inaugural participation in the tournament. Karthik, the first Indian to compete in SA20 after his retirement from Indian cricket in June last year, represented the Paarl Royals in the recently concluded third season.

"Dinesh Karthik is a remarkable professional and proved to be a major asset to SA20 this year. He delivered impressive performances, played vital innings in the middle order, and maintained his wicketkeeping duties effectively. Having him contribute to commentary and public relations engagements was outstanding—he articulates well and has a profound understanding of the game. It was wonderful for him to experience playing in South Africa again, and from our discussions, he truly enjoyed the event, the enthusiastic crowds, and the competitive nature of the cricket. He had very positive remarks about it," Smith shared with IANS in a media interaction on Tuesday.

Karthik, aged 39, took part in 11 matches for Paarl Royals, accumulating 130 runs. The Royals, captained by David Miller, featured a strong roster that included international talents such as Joe Root, Lungi Ngidi, and Mujeeb Ur Rahman. His exit from Indian cricket allowed him to participate in SA20, as only retired Indian players are permitted to compete in overseas franchise leagues.

In the meantime, MI Cape Town celebrated their first SA20 title in a thrilling finale at a packed Wanderers Stadium, thanks to a remarkable performance by Kagiso Rabada. The Proteas speedster delivered a match-winning spell, taking 4 wickets for 25 runs, dismissing Sunrisers Eastern Cape for just 105 runs while chasing MI Cape Town’s formidable total of 181/8—the second-highest score in an SA20 final.

As the league continues to expand, Smith underscored its growing role in cultivating emerging South African talent.

"Our teams are actively scouting for talent, and many have set up academies in South Africa. We have initiated both a school program and a rookie program in the league, creating opportunities to evaluate young players. The platform for South African players is broadening—last year, if I remember correctly, over 17 South African players were chosen for the IPL. More South Africans are definitely gaining opportunities in the IPL, and they remain dedicated to the tournament," he stated.

Smith also highlighted how SA20 is broadening the talent pool beyond South Africa’s national team. "Previously, the world saw only the 15 players selected to represent South Africa, but with SA20 providing a global stage, an additional 60 to 70 players are being recognized each year. That’s a transformative change for young talents with lofty ambitions."

Looking forward, SA20 is poised for a thrilling future. Season 4 is scheduled to begin during South Africa’s festive season from December 26, 2025, to January 26, 2026, leading up to the ICC T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka. Season 5 will revert to its usual January time frame, running from January 9 to February 14, 2027, with a more balanced schedule to allow for improved player recovery and fewer weekday matches.
