Is Ashleigh Gardner Excited About Entering the Playoffs with This Squad?

Key Takeaways
Vadodara, Jan 31 (NationPress) The Gujarat Giants have finally put an end to their eight-match losing streak against the Mumbai Indians by clinching their inaugural victory over the reigning champions, securing a place in the 2026 WPL playoffs. Captain Ashleigh Gardner expressed her satisfaction about moving into the playoffs with the current lineup.
“I’m obviously very pleased with our performance. We recognized that this game was almost a quarterfinal for playoff qualification, so there was a lot at stake. There were numerous positives to take away. As the statistics suggest, today was a different game,” Gardner shared during the post-match presentation.
“We had previously played some commendable cricket against them but just couldn’t cross the finish line. We firmly believed that our approach would work; we just needed to maintain it for a longer duration. To be heading into the playoffs with this group is genuinely gratifying,” Gardner remarked.
On the choice to bat first, Ashleigh stated, “It was a bit of both. We’ve succeeded in all our matches batting first, which breeds confidence. Looking at our batting order, we aim to seize the initiative during the powerplay and set the stage early, knowing we have ample firepower in both the middle and late innings.”
“If we can maximize those phases, it places us in an advantageous position. I still feel we could have pushed our total a bit more; however, the bowlers performed exceptionally well—taking wickets in clusters really hampers the run rate. With Kaur out there in the end, we all understand her potential to be damaging, so we’re thrilled with the win,” she added.
Ashleigh also commended her bowling squad, specifically highlighting Georgia Wareham’s impact. “It was a blend of both. We noticed that variation was crucial—the spinners were instrumental, especially when the pace was diminished. Initially, the ball was gripping and turning, but as the dew settled, it tended to skid.”
“We continually discuss keeping the stumps in play for as long as possible. It may sound cliché, but on a black-soil wicket like this, the ball can shoot through and remain low. We want to ensure that all modes of dismissal are in play instead of bowling wide and allowing the batters to settle. Therefore, our focus was on keeping the plan straightforward and executing it effectively,” she explained.
“We know the world-class talent Georgia possesses. We’ve seen her shine in the Big Bash back home, where she led the Renegades with both bat and ball. I’ve played extensively with her for Australia, so we’re aware of her capabilities.”
“It’s about providing her with the optimal opportunity to fulfill the role we envision for her—coming in during the middle overs and seizing control from the bowlers. She is one of the best leg-spinners globally, and allowing her the freedom to attack and take wickets in that middle phase was crucial. She executed that brilliantly today,” Gardner elaborated.
Mumbai’s captain Harmanpreet Kaur, who valiantly scored an unbeaten 82, lamented the lack of support from her teammates. “In the initial six overs, we failed to execute our batting strategies. Unfortunately, we lost an early wicket and couldn’t accumulate sufficient runs. We aimed to build two solid partnerships, but sadly, we didn’t have any impactful ones today,” she stated.
Reflecting on her mindset during the chase, Harmanpreet said, “I kept reminding myself to stay at the crease. I was certainly seeking support from the other end, but regrettably, no one was able to provide that. These situations arise in games laden with pressure. Sometimes, a team struggles to implement its strategies. Nevertheless, it was a good game overall.”
Regarding MI’s fielding mistakes, Harmanpreet acknowledged, “Yes, we indeed missed a few opportunities while fielding. I believe we conceded around 16-17 extra runs, which cost us dearly. However, we possess a very competent batting lineup. Had there been even one partnership with me, I think it could have altered the outcome. We gave it our all, but unfortunately, we couldn’t secure the win.”
Harmanpreet also shared her calculations during the tense concluding overs. “I was assessing how many sixes we required. At that moment, I believe it was around seven or eight. I was contemplating that if I could face more deliveries and hit those sixes, it might turn the game for us. However, they implemented their plans exceptionally well. We were aware of their bowling strategy, and I understood their approach, but full credit to their bowling unit—they executed it superbly,” she remarked.
Despite the disappointment, Harmanpreet remained hopeful about MI’s playoff prospects. “Yes, I prefer to concentrate on the aspects within my control. If things align in our favor, we’ll be delighted. The positive takeaway is that the tournament is still ongoing. Let’s see how it unfolds tomorrow. Today was a match we aimed to focus on more, but regrettably, we couldn’t achieve what we had intended,” she concluded.
